I forgotten computer stuff, need to relearn. Help!!!

Thu Aug 13, 2020 7:02 pm

So due to not really keeping track of current hardware, I will be in bad shape if I had to build a new system. For example, what kind of SSD do I get as there are different NAND Cell types, and which one is best avoided. Another one, what is current with AMD and Nvidia dGPUs?

I'm thinking of getting Content Creation... So the more fast cores the merrier?

Zen3 "Renoir" Ryzen 4000 series CPUs, NVidia "Ampere" GeForce RTX 3000 series GPUs and AMD "Navi 2x" Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs are all due to arrive before the end of 2020.

As far as SSDs go, just buy a well-known brand (Crucial, Samsung, Kingston, etc.) and avoid the cheapest offerings if you want decent write performance.

For CPUs AMD Zen 2 is currently the sweet spot for price/performance/efficiency. Or wait for Zen 3.

Someone else will need to give you tips on the dGPU since I don't game. (My current GPU is a GT 730, which is pretty close to bottom-of-the-line for current dGPUs.)
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Oh thank you that helps a lot. Now to save up money for my build fund.

Thanks. For SSDs, is MLC tech still the one to get? Or did they managed to work out the kinks out of TLC type SSDs and improved speed and lifespan?

Most of what you'll find on the market today are TLC. Performance and durability are fine for consumer workloads if you avoid the bottom-of-the-barrel stuff. QLC is starting to become more common.

Below the line of acceptable gaming performance when it was brand new. :(

...but passively cooled and supports triple-head output, in a sub-$100 card. For a non-gamer that's a pretty reasonable combination.

For the OP, you can find a few build guides in this thread (since TR has stopped doing them :-? )

I keep forgetting about this Forum and what I post... Anyway I'm thinking of ways to save up money for a new build and certain components are now at a much lower cost then when I build my current rig back in June 2013. Things like SSDs and Large Displays for example are a deal cheaper then they were back then.

As thing currently stands, I don't need to replace my 30's 2560x1600 display. So that helps with the budget. I just need to set one.
