long-overdue PC upgrade....

Wed Sep 09, 2020 8:32 am

I'm upgrading from a Intel Core i7-7700,with a Gigabyte Z270XP-SLI...

to an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X,backed by a Gigabyte X570 Gaming X motherboard.

(I'm re-using my Nvidia GTX 1080,and my 32 GB of Corsair Vengence LPX DDR4.)

All of my other hardware is staying the same, wrapped in a Cooler Master Storm Trooper full-tower case.

Thinking this will be a very large upgrade from my old i7-7700
(feels somehow strange saying that..)

I won't be tackling the rebuild until next week, since I'm still waiting for my motherboard and CPU to arrive.

(I sent the motherboard and CPU to a computer tech friend's place, where he'll get the CPU and motherboard put together..)

After that,I'll be putting everyhing else together in my case at my apartment.

Looking forward to firing up my new Ryzen 7 3700X rebuild.

(My current i7-7700 build dates back to April 2017...)

Why do you need someone else to insert the chip into the mainboard?

Or something else being done besides that such as system burn in?

Hey, my 3700X is replacing an FX-8350!

i7-4790K here.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Worried I'd break it.I don't want to screw up my brand new $300 CPU.

Also,I'm nervous about installing motherboards, ever since (years ago, when I didn't know very much about computers..) I set my motherboard I was replacing down on my static electricity-covered bed..and fried the board.

Getting the motherboard backplate installed makes me nervous.

To each his own (or "know your own limits") I guess. When it comes to stuff like this I trust myself more than most people I know, and certainly more than some random tech at a store.

AMD consumer CPUs are still PGA but (unlike Socket A days) have a heat spreader, so no worries about damaging a delicate LGA socket or chipping the CPU die. Use basic ESD protection, make sure you use a proper sized screwdriver so you don't slip tightening the backplate, and you're good.

I'm actually more puzzled by the decision to not wait for the 4000-series Zen3 processors. A 7700 is no slouch. What can the OP not accomplish with their current system?

But then again, the ship has sailed I suppose. Usually people post before they buy.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

For anyone else contemplating a long-overdue upgrade: Wait four weeks. The Zen3 announcement is coming on October 8th.

Be prepared to wait more than four weeks. The 8th is the announcement date, but we don't know when the shipping date will be. And even if Lisa Su says "... and they're available today!" early supply could be tight. (It'll be even worse with the new GPUs since there are so many people itching for them.)
