Better to Build new System next Year?

Wed Sep 16, 2020 9:18 pm

Just from looking at Newegg and PCpartpicker alone, I'm wondering if I would be better off doing a new Rig sometime next year even if I had the money now to do it.

I would like to go back to playing with DAZ3D which I did for a short time back when I was waiting on Disability. I guess I must have lost interest after a while.

Well, you (almost) always get more bang for your buck if you wait. And new AMD CPUs coming out soon will drive down prices of existing SKUs even if you don't opt for the new hotness.

OTOH, you can play the "if I wait another 6 months things will be even BETTER" game forever.

Ask yourself: 1) How much do I REALLY need/want a new system right now? 2) Do I REALLY have the money to spare (or should I keep some of it in reserve for emergencies)? If the honest answers are "a lot" and "yes" respectively, go for it. Otherwise, wait.

The answer to this question is always "yes, it's probably better to wait" unless the users of the system can demonstrate either (1) it will allow specific things which they cannot currently do or (2) finances will be more constrained in future.

I would argue that an anticipated future financial shortfall is an argument for waiting, or even not building at all (not the other way around).

Depends on the context. In some organisations, budget cycles mean you can have money this year that will disappear if you don't use it, and you know you'll have less next year. In a personal context, I think it sometimes makes sense to spend on a substantial item rather than have the money frittered away (e.g. when first going to university and spending the savings from a summer job, or when bailing from a corporate life to become a teacher).

Personally, I'm in "price watch" mode. Been contemplating a VR-capable build to replace my 2013 machine, and 30 series pricing looks pretty good for the performance bump. I figure if I get the spousal OK, I'll start buying parts around the holiday season or shortly after, hoping cards are in stock at reasonable prices.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

Yes, that's a good approach too if you've got an existing half-decent machine and the money to spare. There's always sweet times to buy, when good new tech launches.

The NVIDIA 3080 looks nice for the performance (shame about the price and power consumption!), and I'm sure that the upcoming AMD CPUs will be too. Same as when a new-gen MacBook Pro or iPhone comes out, if you're in "maybe soon" mode then it makes sense to buy on the crest of the wave.

I'm still waiting for my ship to come in, however I'll also be waiting 4-6 months for all the new hardware to be released and prices to settle.

So far it looks my budget for my next computer with monitors etc. will be in the $3k range...
I've never spent that much on new computer before, there is nothing from my old machine that can be recycled into the new one.
Main machine: Core I7 -2600K @ 4.0Ghz / 16 gig ram / Radeon RX 580 8gb / 500gb toshiba ssd / 5tb hd
Old machine: Core 2 quad Q6600 @ 3ghz / 8 gig ram / Radeon 7870 / 240 gb PNY ssd / 1tb HD

Well the only thing I would be keeping from my current Rig is my 30" 2560x1600 display. Or maybe one of the SSDs. While I did spend far more then I normally do when building a new system back in 2013, I did get my monies worth out of it by keeping this for seven years. Aside from a fancy keyboard, Steam Controller, and video card upgrade. Of course I had put the old one back in due to failure.

Not sure if Daz3D makes use of GPU rendering (it didn't when I last used it, but that was eons ago so loads could have changed since then). If it doesn't, you'll benefit from a good multi-core CPU, so at the very least waiting for the RyZen 4000 series would be prudent. Either get one of them, or see if the pricing on other CPUs drops in response.

If it does make use of GPU compute, it would also make sense to wait for RTX 3000 series pricing to shake out and/or until we see what RDNA2 has to offer.

For both of the above, waiting until Q1 2021 would probably make more sense than buying now.

Well I'm using using DAZ3D now, but this something I would like to play with again.

This thread slightly confuses me.

DAZ 3D is the company name, folks.

Which product are we talking about? That's my confusion. There's DAZ Studio, Cararra, Bryce, Hexagon, etcetera. Are you modeling your own assets with Hexagon, Blender (not from DAZ), or the like? What kind of rendering are you doing and with which renderer? There's iray, Cycles, and others. In addition to doing or not doing different things, they work or don't work with Nvidia or AMD GPUs.

Clear up some of this and maybe somebody can give a better response. :P :)

Well DAZ Studio. It is kind of like Poser, but it is a Free application, but you buy the extras such as the Models and Textures and whatnot.

Now we're getting somewhere. Which renderer are you interested in using within D/S?
