Upgrade or Replace/TS

Wed Jun 16, 2021 10:13 am

Good afternoon y'all! For a few months now my current build, in my sig, has been dead. I'm not sure what the exact issue is as my machine is not able to see my boot drive when I moved it 3 feet. Looking at my months old tabs of what I was troubleshooting, it looked to be me trying to fix the boot record. I can try to get the exact error message later for anyone who might be curious or want to help TS it. Moving on...

Currently I have a few options:
Option 1, install a new copy of Win 10 on a new HD; my old Win 10 was me upgrading from Win 7 for free.
Option 2, replace the mother board for another socket LGA 1150 mobo; in case the SATA ports are an issue.
Option 3, upgrade to the econobox or sweet spot 2019 build; cannibalize what I can out of my old system. (probably only the PSU and SSDs).

I figure if I go the cheapest route of option 1 or 2, I should be fine till Zen 4 rolls out next year. If I go to option 3, I can get more use of out my computer (4K video editing, playing all the games I was unable to on my current build), and upgrade to Zen 4 in 2022/23.

I'm still keen to isolate the issue, and fixing the cause if possible, but am prepared for option 1 and 2 and riding out the system till next year.

First, is the data accessible, and should you backup to another drive?

But definitely try to figure out what's wrong.

Getting a message already means something works. Is it a BIOS message or Windows?

You can try to boot Ubuntu from a USB drive. If that works, and you have a spare SATA drive, try to connect it instead of (or in addition to) the current one, and install some OS to see how that goes.

I presume you've tried reseating the SATA cables and trying a different SATA port? It would be odd for all of the ports to die at once when moving the system a short distance: if something happened to the hardware, it would likely only affect the connected ports. And really, if the failure corresponds with moving the system, my first thought would be that one of the cables may have pulled out slightly.

Apologies for necroing my post but the issue was corroded sata cables. As far as I could tell the ports were not corroded but the cables were. My system is back up and running.

Thanks.
No need to apologize for reporting the mystery solution.
