CPU's with/without video

Sat Dec 18, 2021 6:43 am

Hi. I was close to choosing an Intel Core i5-10400F until I noticed that you'd need a separate graphics card. I'm not a gamer so don't need fancy video capability. Is it the case that all Intel models ending with F can't play video or is it more complex than that?

Would this Core i5 play video?:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Core-i5- ... 485&sr=8-5

While I'm here, is there anything I need to be aware of when I come to pick the mobo? I'm reading that some mobos are called B550M and intended for AMD cpu's. I used to think that any mobo could accomodate any cpu...

Many thanks.

Standalone graphics cards can handle video decoding as well. So the question is only whether you want to avoid the need for a separate graphics card.

Regarding motherboards, no, they're not generic. AMD and Intel which are separate; you also need the socket type to match the CPU; and sometimes there's more specificity than that.

First choose the chipset(s) based on your target CPU, then narrow down motherboards with these chipsets. It wouldn't hurt to check also the CPU support of each motherboard in your shortlist, though usually compatibility problems are only with either previous generation CPUs, or upcoming ones.

Hi meerkt. Yes, I want to avoid the need for a separate graphics card. Never had one in my two previous PC's.

Hi. I think the following are compatible and will NOT require a separate graphics card:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/ybjBD3 ... me-b560m-a
Would someone be kind enough just to confirm that for me? Many thanks indeed.

All consumer non-F Intels come with graphics, as far as I remember.

The mobo looks fine. Just for extra assurance, here's the official compatibility list:

Don't forget you also need DDR4 RAM.

Thanks again. This may be a minor matter but it's bugging me. The RAM I'm leaning towards is "Viper Steel DDR4 16GB (2 x 8GB) 3200MHz Performance Memory Kit - PVS416G320C6K". Here:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Patriot-Memory ... r=8-1&th=1
But the mobo compatibility list (link above) doesn't have that number - it has PVLW416G320C6K, PVR416G320C6KW and PV416G320C6K.

Surely just an oversight of the compatibility list compiler do you think?

Yeah, they wouldn't list every RAM model and submodel there.

It's practically the same series, and RAM's rarely a problem.
But if you want to go the extra mile you can ask Patriot at [email protected]
