7600GT vs. x850xt

Thu Mar 16, 2006 3:40 pm

Hi, I'm brand new here and have a few questions. I am looking to upgrade the graphics card on my computer, I play games like fear and bf2, I also am mainly upgrading for the new TES game-oblivion- ,I have a x300se and was looking at getting either a 7600GT-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130283
or a x850xt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102688
Now I know that the 7600 has sm3.0 and is newer. But from what I can tell it is less powerful, it has 12 piplines compared to x850xt's 16 it also has about half the pixel fillrate, and has a memory transfer rate of 128 while the x850 has 256.

Now, in terms of wich card will deliver better quality and fps, as well as wich card will last me into the future, what card would you guys choose? (I know a decent amount about video cards so most of this info should be correct, however if their is something I missed or was wrong about, please point it out! thanks.)

X850XT is still a decent card, but if the games are doing exclusive SM3.0 stuff, then the newer 7600GT will run better. Fill rate differences will show up more if you are running high resolutions I suppose, so what resolution are you going to run?

I just can't get over the price for the x850xt. Damn my jaw drops every time.

i am hoping to run it at 1280 x 1024, the game (oblivion) i am mainly getting it for, supports shaders 3.0, though not intensly just for the very highest quality level.

Wait till the game is out and people run benches on it first. And may be even after the first few patches. Then we talk.

Too low or too high?

Anyway, I'd personally go for the 7600GT myself because it's newer...that SM3.0 stuff can make a serious framerate difference in some games.
Looking at some (admittedly old) benchmarks the X850XT seems to be about the level of the 6800 Ultra, and in some games it even gets beat out by the 6800GT. The 7600GT lays a darned good smackdown on the 6800GS.
So I'd go with the 7600GT, though that's admittedly biased by how much I still love my 6600GT.
