Recommend Me a Mobo

Mon May 29, 2006 1:08 pm

Can anyone recommend a 939 motherboard that doesn't use active cooling on the chipset? I'm looking to build a HTPC and I don't want the additional noise.

For full size boards you have to go for the Deluxe versions, or mod it yourself with a bigger chipset heatsink (you may have to cut down some of the fins to allow video cards).

If you don't need full size boards, then any 6150/6100 boards should be ok for you, pretty cheap too.

My motherboard (See sig) is passively cooled. Nice little low-profile thing too. However, it's standard ATX, so I dunno if you'll want it for an HTPC :-/

Side note: Gigabyte also has a passively-cooled 6100 w/ socket AM2 out (It's on newegg.)

I was actually looking for a standard ATX one because I figure it will help with cooling.

Actually, it makes sense.

Components are further apart, and usually a full-sized mb goes in a larger case, allowing more airflow, leading to better cooling.

I'll take good airflow over any messed up large case with stale air. And who says you cannot use a micro-ATX board in a regular case?
