Need help picking a graphics card

Mon Jul 10, 2006 10:20 am

I have a pc with an ASUS A7V333 motherboard with an Athlon processor. It has an AGP 4x slot and I am looking to upgrade my graphics card. I am buying a 19" LCD monitor that will do 1440x900 or higher. I am not a gamer but want to watch Dvds and put in a Tv tuner so I can use the pc for a dvd player and tv in my bedroom. I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible but be ready for Vista and HD. There are so many boards out there, so many chipsets, and many are engineered for gaming. What can I get that would give me what I need at the best cost without buying too much?

Welcome to the forums.

What card do you have now? For watching DVDs you may be ok to stay with your existing one.

Vista? You probably should be looking at a new machine I am afraid, unless you are willing to turn off Aero. If anything at the very least you probably need to add more RAM. Please list your current specs.

You could pick up a Radeon 9600 All-in-Wonder for $100 on Newegg - that gives video that should do a halfway good job with Vista, and the TV tuning is built in. Downside is no DVI port. Otherwise, buy a separte tuner card, and almost any recent AGP graphics card should work fine for the task at hand.

I think your best bet would be to get a radeon x1600 pro. They seem well suited to your needs and are relatively cheap($114.99 on newegg).
