Hey guys, its been a while

Mon Oct 09, 2006 1:04 pm

Ive been thoroughly engrossed in the world of motorsports.

But I finally got sick of my old computer and just put this together, what do you think?

Antec P180
Seasonic S12-430HB
ASUS M2N-E
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-6400 2GB
BFG GeForce 7950 GT OC
Western Digital Raptor 36GB SATA 10000RPM
Zalman CNPS9500
Zalman VF900-CU
Arctic Silver 5

Im going to be converting this (the one Im using now) machine into a fileserver and putting my TB of HDs in it in a closet somewhere.

I would also recommend a 6300, or a 6400 Intel right now.

Also don't get a 7950Gt, go for the 7900GTO, which is only $250ish right now.

Deffinetly C2D and a 7900GTO, a DS3 or P5B for mobo, is 36GB or HDD space enough?
Damn the torpedoes , full speed ahead.

AMD X2 4200+, Asus A8N-E, 3GBs of RAM, 7900GS

you know while Splinter should have asked and the C2D is where it is at right now. It's not like that system is going to suck ass. Hell I am still on a 4200+ and a 7800GT. Until I run into a game that needs more power I am not upgrading.

Depending on what he is using it for. It might be email, surfing some light gaming. It is certainly not a slow system.

Yes but he said it's an old system, which to me means he probably won't be using much of anything from it. If it's a total new platform etc, why go AMD this round? There really isn't a price advanage to it, and the allendales beat the pants off of them.

Dual cores for just a file server?

Didn't say there was a reason he should go AMD. He should have asked, which I did point out, first.

Granted the system isn't a total dog, that was my only point.

And he could be AMD only for all I know.

Meh, I chose AMD because I know them well. Im comfortable with them.

I chose the 7950 GT because it was only 70 more than the 7900

Flying Fox, my old system (XP 3200) is becoming the file server, not this one.

I think the 7900GTO should be about the same speed as the 7950GT if not a bit faster, given its just a 7900GTX with underclocked memory.
Intel Core i7 3770K / 16 GB Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600 / Intel 520 180GB SSD / WD 2TB HDD / Zotac GTX 1060 6GB / Corsair TX650 V2 PSU / Asus Xonar DG

BOOOOO!!!!!!! *cough* *cough* blech! *gags* *pukes* *faints*

(After a few hours...)

DUDE! There are BETTER things than that available! Like the E6300 is SO meant for you! I'm no fanboy. My only loyalty is to excellence and currently Intel rules in that department. Are you buying that just to fund AMD's development of K8L?

And do you have anything against simultaneous HDR+AA? Do the folding community a favor and get a Radeon X1950XT!

EDIT: Oh wait, sorry about all that! I thought you hadn't bought the parts yet.

To Splinter: Sensei! What have you done??? You always advised us to buy the best components available to aid us in our fight against Shredder and Krang. Oh woe is us! What are we gonna do now? Shredder's bound to be using Core 2 Duo's and X1950XT's in his foot soldiers now!

Athlons are still the CPU of choice for quiet computing.

So buy a silent 120mm fan. The cpu's themselves shouldn't be making noise. Buying last gen hardware for almost no (if any) savings is silly imo. There is tons of value to be had with respect to performance with a solid e6300 build.

a 120mm Nexus is no good if it causes your processor to overheat.

Anyway, its already done and paid for.

Turions, Yonahs and Meroms are the choices for really quiet computing, IMO.
