980Ti price drop

Tue Jun 14, 2016 4:22 pm

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127912

Looks like it's time to clear out stock. Of course, since it's slower than a 1070 a lot of times, maybe $399/$369 AR is not really such a "hot deal"...

This actually seems like a helluva deal.

The 980Ti can be up to 40 or 50% faster than a 970, and with this price cut, is now the same price.

I was waiting for the new 10xx cards, but maybe I'll just go this route.

EDIT: Remember kids, only buy graphics cards now if you need graphics cards now. I'm waiting for 10xx

Say what now? GTX 970's are not 399USD.

I do think it's a decent deal though. Can't really buy a 1070 right now, so for those that NEED that approximate level of performance right now, it's not a bad choice.

Buy three more so that you can quad-SLI before NVidia kills it off.

That's strange. When I clicked on the OP's link earlier, it was 399.

I dunno, Doom wanted 5GB VRAM for super visuals. Another plus for going new generation 8GB GTX 1070 if you're paying that much.

If there is a $230 RX 480 8GB, supposedly near GTX 980 performance, so probably can support that much VRAM, i think a lot more slow games might offer super texture modes.

Wowee,

I clicked through for a laugh, because there's a pretty big disparity between the prices you US guys get charged and what we see over here in Aus; if you set your region to Australia, the MSI's price is $1,081 excluding GST [@ 10%] and shipping. Given that we're running at about USD0.74 per AUD, someone's having a giggle all the way to the bank!

[edit:]

Just checked the EVGA card, it's AUD542 in cart, which seems much more reasonable [~4/3rds USD].

Do you blokes in Aus ever just ask a mate in the US to buy something like this for you on your behalf? Just curious.

I haven't used them, but I understand that mobs like comGateway [mail proxy services] are a pretty reasonable solution, especially as you can engage them to buy on your behalf.

Anyone else find it odd that the 980ti can be had cheaper than all but one 980 SKU?

The prices on most of the SKUs according to PCPartPicker still seems high. For both 980 and 980ti SKUs. Especially the 980 SKUs.

Maybe Nvidia waiting until the 29th to move the 970/980 down in price?

I would say at an equal price the 980ti does overclock to higher performance than the 1070 FE. Although once AIB 1070's arrive good luck selling any 980ti that haven't sold through.

They are matching GTX 1070 price, so it's more to entice current 980/980 ti users to go SLI. Those are not clear inventory prices, just enough of nudge to get high spenders to splurge a little more while they get next gen card envy.

This is not them panicking or surprised. All of these sales were planned long ago.

On sale at newegg CND also $50 off, but don't forget shipping and 13% tax though on top of that price.

Is that the current goalpost for VRAM, 5GB? Yikes... we need a new form of texture compression

Yep, and if MSI drops their 970 price I just may be tempted to do that.

Yeah, looks like they've jacked with the price since I originally posted.

Re: 980Ti price drop

I've been checking my local Micro Center's graphics card inventory several times per day over the last several weeks in anticipation of 1070s/1080s actually showing up on store shelves and staying in stock long enough for me to pick one or two of them up (hasn't happened yet). During that time I've seen the 980 Ti's price fluctuate massively. Last week they jacked them up to ~$100 over MSRP only to slash and burn the prices this week. Cheapest in-stock 980 Ti at this moment is a reference design MSI for $435 ($405 after rebate). I don't think it's quite worth it at that price unless you're going SLI. They list the Poseidon hybrid liquid/air cooled card for a mere $399 and that would absolutely be worth it but it's not actually in-stock. Of course with Micro Center you have to pay tax so add another $30-60 onto the price of whichever card you go with as well.

Update: looks like they just got a shipment of Asus FE 1080s 10+ on hand. I'd rather pay less for non-reference though so I think I'll wait.

They might be panicking in 8 days. We shall see!

But the cuts so far seem to be very minor. $125 officially of the 980ti isn't meaning at official $525 pricing, $50 off the 980 is still over the claimed 1080 MSRP. 970 cuts seem a really minor cut to stay against 470 and 480 when they will need a major cut.

I really doubt Nvidia panics at anything AMD does these days.

There are limits on what you can do with compression. The GeForce 1000 series got new tech, but it is only a reduction of 20%. We're probably at the point of diminishing returns anyway---compression algorithms have been developed for quite a long time. The days of sudden 2x-4x gains are over.

And texture resolutions are only going to increase over time.

From my anecdotal experience of 1, 1070s are coming into and out of stock at a decent pace. I ordered 1070 from newegg last thursday, it was listed as 'back-ordered', came into stock and shipped on Friday, got it on Wednesday. There was another site that kept a running list of how many units they were expecting in the next shipment and how many had already been spoken for.

Course, for all I know, that 'back-order' status I experienced might have been the tail end of a weeks long drought and I just happened to get lucky, but I still wouldn't settle for a 980Ti in lieu of a 1070 unless I wanted one to do compute with.

The 1070 is the only enthusiast card in the running right now (and for the next 6 months), so it's probably no surprise that they're in high demand. Is this unprecedented? I don't recall any other time when one team had no answer to the other team's product for such a long time (even in the 9700pro days, at least nvidia had the dustbuster to sell to rubes).
