FX Processors

AMD FX 8350 Black Edition Vishera 4.0 GHz Eight-Core AM3+ Boxed Processor with Wraith Cooler $109.99

AMD FX 8320E Black Edition PileDriver 3.2 GHz Eight-Core AM3+ Boxed Processor $79.99

Not a bad deal if you are upgrading from a slower processor on your AM3 system.

If your old socket AM3 system isn't meeting your performance needs anymore, I suggest to you that it's time for a new socket.

I'd even suggest... Ripping the old socket out by its threads and replacing it with one of these!

I imagine an 8-core AM3 system would be useful as a workstation for specific stuff. If you do a ton of video re-encoding, or maybe music work; It's cheap and uses DDR3 RAM which you might have lying around. Maybe virtualizing a ton of slow/tiny servers?

Edge cases, I know.

At that price it could make sense if you have an FX-capable motherboard that currently has an older CPU (e.g. quad-core Phenom II) in it, and a workload that can make use of the extra threads.

It makes zero sense for a new build, unless you've already got a compatible motherboard and some RAM sitting around, and don't care about single-threaded performance.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I've stood by the line for years, but this weekend I'm pulling the motherboard + FX-8320e out of my erstwhile workstation and selling them. The single threaded IPC's on par with Conroe; ganged up together they're more formidable, but most games and apps don't scale that well. Waste heat, latency, and architectural inefficiency outside of well-threaded integer-thumping apps have been hallmarks of the experience, even on Piledriver. The 6600K I grabbed last year (which I'm also pulling and selling) comprehensively embarrasses it. I'm tired of juggling two systems when one Ryzen 1700 will maintain parity or slay both of them working together in a fraction of the power. Between those two and the 2008 Mac Pro sitting under my desk, I may have enough money to buy the Ryzen replacement and a round trip plane ticket to see a friend when this is all said and done.

All of that said, someone wanting a Server in the Corner™ with ECC support could do much worse. Strap on a decent spare cooler (or use the Wraith AMD's been nice enough to include now), throw in some RAM, undervolt the chip, and toss in a graphics card you don't care about. It'll handle everything from torrents to VMs to scientific computing to DVD ripping, and stay responsive through it all. But it's not sexy, and even in the niches where it excelled its value proposition was the big selling point.

Don't get me wrong, my main rig is still an FX-8350 and I've generally been happy with it. There's no way I'd buy one today though, except in one of the scenarios I already mentioned.

I already upgraded my X4 955 BE to a used X6 1100T BE and as I recall, the 8350 is not much of an upgrade over that.

It's really not worth going out of your way, no. There are edge cases where you'll see an improvement - SSE4.x support, AVX, AES-NI - but I wouldn't lift a finger to that end. And I just sold my FX-8320e earlier today. So long, old pal.
