Re: 31½" 2560x1440 @144Hz FreeSync2 for $550

With the latest firmware (version 1016.2), performance is noticeably improved. FreeSync range has been extended to 48-144 Hz. LFC is automatically enabled for monitors with 2.5X or greater FreeSync range. I did have to try several USB drives before I found a very old (and small) drive that the monitor would recognize to flash the firmware.

Wasn't the refresh range always 48-144MHz?

Originally it was supposed to be 48-144, however when it was released it was 80-144.

*I own the 27 inch version of this monitor, it was 450 on bf*

True 8bit panel. We need info to either refute or confirm that panel model.

It's a 8bit+frc and so is the lg32ud99 as far as I can tell. Looks like the page was updated because I'm sure it said 8 bit only the last time I looked.

On my Samsung c27hg70 when running dx log mode and changing it to hdr it shows the additional color pallet.

Display Color Space: DXGI_COLOR_SPACE_RGB_FULL_G2084_NONE_P2020

Monitor Advanced Color Capabilities: BT2020RGB BT2020YCC Eotf2084Supported AdvancedColorSupported AdvancedColorEnabled

In case anyone is wondering. My biggest complaint about this monitor is that it doesn't have enough backlight zones. This said for the price I'm very satisified. I got my c27hg70 for 450.

Edit*

I also turned off freesync2 to see what it would do. Same thing except no freesync2.

Through a totally unexpected newegg price match thing some of us early-adopters got the 32" for $550 on our orders, only if you didn't cancel it during the month-long launch delay though. I stuck it out because the 4k "uber" HDR/144hz models got delayed for 6 months and priced even higher, might even be another delay as there hasn't been a peep about them in ages.

First monitor I've had that you can flash yourself over usb, and its about damn time this becomes normal. I had a monitor over 10 years ago that needed a factory update to correct messed-up 1:1 mapping on its hdmi ports. Getting the RMA and shipping it back was a royal pain in the butt and over a month of waiting.

Re: 31½" 2560x1440 @144Hz FreeSync2 for $550

I got the C27HG70 for Christmas!!!!!
I'd decided that 32" was too big for my viewing distance. The C27HG70 (link $450 lowest price) is the same panel as the C32HG70 just smaller.

I flashed to the newest firmware 1016.2 right away per this thread (thank you). The firmware update instructions were difficult to comprehend (the monitor doesn't just automatically launch itself into firmware update mode upon inserting flash drive, despite what the instructions seem to suggest. you have to hold the joystick down for 5-10 seconds to activate) and Samsung's support page wants to give you the firmware for the 32" version, so you have to dig around to get the right version, but it was straightforward once you know what to do (this forum was useful).

I was surprised at how "finicky" the off-angle viewing is. There's a noticeable shift in blacks when I adjust my viewing height by even a few (3-4) inches (there was a very narrow window where the blacks are super deep). This can be remedied via tilt and height adjustments, but was an interesting change coming from IPS. Because of the curvature, I didn't notice much problem with the horizontal angles from my chair, but there's color shift if I move a lot. I've heard that VA is not as good for this as IPS, but I'd generalize my observations to say that viewing angles and color shift were more similar to a good quality TN panel than to IPS. There was less degradation as viewing angles increased compared to TN though.

Colors weren't as vivid as I expected. Some of that can be compensated by settings adjustments, but I used the out-of-box calibration (comes with a calibration report). Certainly my two other IPS monitors have more vivid colors....even if it's not "realistic" color reproduction. I did notice that blacks were deeper and colors were more vivid in games than in general Windows/browsing usage. Not sure what to make of that.

I ended up replacing the stand with this unit from VIVO for $27. The hutch on my desk is only 8.5" deep and this stand allowed me to fit the furthest protrusion of the monitor within that limitation (with a little tilt included). So assume with that stand, you'll be about 8.5" from the back of the post to the front-most edge of the monitor depth-wise. This is the second VIVO mount I've used, the other being this dual-arm mount and I can say that I am more than happy with both.

2018-11-21 update:
Newegg has the Samsung C32HG70 on sale for $461 with code EMCEERP48 through 11/26. That is the lowest price that I have seen on this monitor, much lower than I paid for it 15 months ago.
