This is the UPS that I use. It does very well for the price.

I should upgrade my aging APCs (which are due for battery replacements anyway)... tempting.

I might do the same if the ones I had were older, but the oldest one I've got at the moment is only two years old. Maybe next year.

Mine are all 5-15 years old and have had one or more battery replacements already. I figure the charger/inverter circuits will give out eventually, and it would be nice to have a sinewave unit (better compatibility with active PFC PSUs).

Wow, best price I've seen on that model to date, and I bought mine back around 2012. Couldn't recommend it more, have yet to need to replace the batteries in mine either.

Yeah, the battery replacement cost for my old one is what tipped me over to buying a new one.
At $119 for the whole thing, a new battery might cost half of that.

The old one still works but the battery life is not what it was.
I think I'll mod my old one so I can hook it up to a couple of car batteries easily.
I got 3-4 hours of run time doing that after the hurricane.

Wish I could get it to discharge the car batteries more. It does not drain them.
Guess that is a battery life factor to extend the two small built in batteries.

Don't know if it could also charge the car batteries or not.
Think it would depend on how it is built... whether it would over load the system or not.
Might decide to find out the hard way.

Yeah, unless you get "deep cycle" batteries, lead-acid don't much like being discharged all the way.

My guess is that it'll charge them, but it will take a very long time for them to recharge after the inverter has been used.

Define "drain." Standard lead-acid chemistry has a working range of 1.75-2.14V per cell (and there are six cells in a 12V nominal battery), and even discharging to that limit is pretty rough on a typical car battery battery or small backup-rated SLA. As JBI indicated, if you want more then you need a deep-cycle battery and a charge-management circuit that knows about it. Your cheapest path is probably to modify a rooftop solar inverter/storage system, but if you just want 1kW or less available to survive an occasional storm outage, a gas generator and a bottle of fuel stabilizer are cheaper and will run longer provided you've got a suitable outdoor storage location.

Ok, 6x1.75 =10.5 volts... good to know what level to watch for and keep above. Thanks!

Heh, I've got that but I seem to need a new gen.
The UPS refuses to accept the output of the gen. It trys a taste and goes back to battery power.

Lights, air conditioner, frig all work but the digital answering machine died instantly
when plugged into the gen output making crackling noises. Never came back from it.
The new gen I been looking at went up $100... no black friday sale for gens.
The voltage reads ok but I have nothing to read voltage spikes with
and the UPS says 57 hertz.
Electrician say at $100/hr to repair... buy a new one.(it maybe 10 years old or more)

57 Hz, if accurate, is waaaayy out of spec and there's probably other waveform corruption going on. Some less-sensitive devices may run but if the voltage regulator is that far gone, you're playing with a Destruct-O-Matic.

Yep, my new gen is due Dec 5. Dual fuel gasoline/propane 4K watts.
Going to try to stay with propane. Not have to worry with Old Gas issues.

Heh, you can't get next day shipping from Amazon on a 130 lb gen.
