WD 8TB external HDD for $150

Mon Nov 27, 2017 11:00 am

WD Easystore WDBCKA0080HBK-NESN
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easysto ... Id=5792401

It's just unfortunate that most sales are for external drives and not internal.

Seagate has too many SMR drives which are utter trash for anything but enterprise cold storage that has software awareness of them. Leave it up to spinning rust specialists to come up with write amplification and try to pass it off as a "feature". Unfortunately WD is joining this fail train soon with some 12TB models.

WD easystore 8TB are guaranteed to be helium (hgst-plant) drives, sometimes red label sometimes white but same internals. I grabbed some at $130 recently, sweet deals.

The only gotcha is 3.3v sense on some of them (if bridged doesn't spin up) which is only an issue for some psus; most drive bays, backplanes and similar devices seem to be fine. Worst case this is solved with molex-sata converter or similar homebrew fix, just make sure you don't get the kind that go up in smoke.

I trust Seagate drives...I don't trust Seagate marketing people that stick SMR drives in random things without telling anyone.

That said, they work fine for 99% of user workloads.

I'd flip that on its head. I don't particularly trust any mechanical HDDs, though I probably distrust HGST slightly less than the rest, based on personal experience over the past decade and a half. (I suppose all bets are off now that they're part of WD though.)

Taking a job in the storage industry has been... interesting. I guess you could say it has been a bit of an eye opener. It's pretty amazing the kinds of bugs that make it into shipping product (and all vendors are guilty of doing this). Some days, I find it amazing these things work at all.

That's because 99% of users have pretty undemanding workloads!

SSDs have made high performance HDDs a niche product, so HDDs now compete mainly on $/GB. The way you drive down $/GB is by pushing the density envelope, so sacrificing performance (and consistency of performance across workloads) for density was the predictable outcome.

I guess I should have qualified that - I trust all mechanical HDDs the same, IE: not much at all. I don't call anything a real "backup" unless it's disconnected from the grid.

Exactly. They're only going to become more common - so the more you can tailor your workloads / uses to fit whats available the happier you'll be.

For consumers, though, they're perfectly fine and even tend to perform better for bursty user workloads than traditional HDDs. For a NAS or something similar they're pretty excellent (the newer drives even handle RAID rebuilds pretty nicely).

I'm so pissed. Best Buy had that same hdd for $130 in their Black Friday ad. I was ready to pounce after reading their mail flyer on Thursday, only to find out it had already been on sale for $130 for some unknown amount of time and they were sold out everywhere (at least that's what their website said, and I wasn't going to drive 30 minutes for something that was out of stock).

Yep, that's the way BF works now. A lot of the stuff goes on sale earlier in the week or even beforehand so if you wait until said Friday to hit the deals many will probably be gone. I suspect vendors also like that they can get customers in earlier yet also not be culpable if they do run out before Black Friday. Can't speak for this year, but in the past Newegg did this often with some of the best deals, they would start BF already out of stock.

It was actually a different model for $130, a Best Buy specific one. These $150 models are the same as the real thing. Both of mine read as standard WD80EFAX drives (WD Red 8TB/256MB cache). With the advent of 12+TB drives I'm sure these 8TB ones will drop in price next year.

Any idea what the difference was/is on the best buy specific models? I wasn't able to find that info.

For the two different models on sale at Best Buy on Black Friday, the -NESN vs. the-NEBB, I honestly have no idea except from the price. Spec page for the latter says it's the "holiday edition" but hardware and software wise they look identical. At BF this year, it was $130 for one (as noted above) and $160 for the other, and of course they were sold out of the former. :P :(

Newer drives have these white label models (ie: not the WD Reds) which reset when supplied with 3.3V. I take it the -NEBB ($130) drives have these newer whites, but don't know for sure. Mine were -NESN and came with Reds.
