Samsung 970 EVO 500GB - $119 @ Microcenter

Mon Nov 12, 2018 11:21 am

Microcenter has the 970 EVO M.2 NVMe 500GB for only $119. I just paid $150 for this very same drive a couple weeks ago.

I paid $200 for a 960 Evo 500GB earlier this year, and that was on sale. Nice progress on price.

It appears to have also dropped at several other locations. $116.99 at both Amazon and Newegg.

The 1TB model has correspondingly dropped to $227.99. I looked up the price trend of the 1TB model on Amazon and wow, it was selling for ~$399.99 on July. 21st. That's one heck of a drop in 3.5 months!

~230 bucks for a 1TB 970 EVO is pretty amazing, even if you hate Samsung.

The real question is how low will it go? I'm looking to build a new system holiday season 2019. I'm wondering if this oversupply in the SSD market will be gone by then, and if it's worth buying now/in a few months.

Holiday 2018, or 2019? A year is a long time (in tech).

19. I realize that it's a year away, but I'm not sure about the NAND market. I've read some report suggesting low prices will carry into 2019. I'm not sure if the falling SSD prices we're experiencing will follow the same path that RAM prices did. That's what I'm nervous about.

I try not to anticipate these things beyond a few months as a general rule. It's generally just not worth the effort since so many things could happen in the course of a year to affect the release date or street pricing of X component. I suppose you could use one of those price tracking sites and then pounce if you see an upward trend happening. That's probably what I'd do rather than trying to research the market its self, and/or it was super inconvenient to have parts sitting around unused for some reason.
Do not meddle in the affairs of archers, for they are subtle and you won't hear them coming.

This is kinda what I do. I use the price sites, but it's not like I'm going to wait a year to pounce on a 20 dollar sale on a ~200 dollar item. I buy when I need things, at the best deal/price I can find, and I've been happy doing it that way for years. Don't plan to change much now.

Yeah, you'd need a crystal ball to know what'll happen in 13 months. The price could keep dropping, or the NAND manufacturers could decide things have gotten out of hand and dial back production.
