Sempron 2800 + ECS NF3 250 board for $80

Fri Jan 27, 2006 9:36 am

Outpost is selling a Sempron 2800+ with an ECS NF3-A754 board for $80 plus shipping. What isn't clear is whether the chip is the 64-bit variety, but regardless, this deal is great for a budget pc.

Sempron 2800+ deal

Well, it sure is a terrific deal. Basically the motherboard is free! But it's an AGP board and I wanted pcie.

If my budget wasn't already blown-out by the purchase of a used s754 A64 2800+ and a refurb nForce3 250 mobo, I would be all over this.

According to AMD and newegg this is a 32bit cpu. The xxxxBABOX units are 32bit and the xxxxBXBOX units are 64bit.

It appears that all s754 Semprons are SSE2 enabled. And I doubt the F@H DGromacs WUs are the last SSE2 WUs we'll see.

Name six 64bit apps and/or games .............. I'm still waiting ....... All I can think of is a 64bit OS with driver issues. Thanks to cass I do have a 64bit version of Fedora Core 3, I don't know what driver issues it has.

The AGP slot is a non-starter. Unless you already had a spare AGP card just laying around, it would be better to get a PCI-Express board with integrated graphics like the Biostar 6100-M7.

The Puma wants it for a folding machine i think? Any cheap card would work in that instance.

Adding $7.84 shipping brings it to $88. That's cheap, but it still puts you in the situation of having to waste money on an obsolete AGP video card.

This is a decent deal.....my mom is in dire need to upgrade her 1.0 athlon system....this should make a nice and cheap upgrade for her. Plus I can recycle her old AGP card....

A dire need to upgarde? For what, email? I'm on an 800 MHz Athlon and i wouldn't call it a dire need to upgrade. This deal is nice though for someone who doesn't care about PCI-E. I will probably pick up an AM2 board this summer/fall with Sempron.

There have been enough CPU eating Flash and stuff that will make system performance slow enough to be noticed. Also, IIRC AM2 Semprons are not due until after the move to S939 Semprons? And we still don't see S939 Semprons yet.

Not in the retail channels anyways. I have a Compaq SR1610NX desktop and that model comes with a 3200+ S939 Sempron. So get your S754 Semprons while you still can! :P

I actually want a S939 Sempron to hold me over to the X2. :-? I need to find out the HP truck routes and see if one may fall off on the road. :)

I use firefox and true enough there are times when CPU usage gets pegged at 100%. However, i know how to turn flash off to make that problem go away. This problem only occurs when many multiple tabs are open though.

I also have two P2 233 laptops with Win98 for things like web browsing and email. If anything those would be in "dire" need to be upgraded.

Seriously though, if your just using it to browse the web and email then 1 GHz is enough. If firefox flash is a problem maybe Opera can help out? That is free now too. Well thats my opinion though, and maybe you are just looking for a reason to build a new system or lighten your wallet.

About the AM2 Semprons, i read they will be introduced sometime after the AM2 Athlons. As for 939 Semprons, i have been wondering when these would show up if at all anymore with the imminent release of AM2, but i am more interested in the AM2 platform. I can wait though, i'm not in a dire situation.

Do I need the rest of the Compaq stuff? Probably not. Besides I'm not in the US. We'd better shut up now because we are going way OT. :P

Well, my bro's mobo (abit nf7-s) chipset fan just went south, and I told him about this deal and he promptly ordered it. There's still life in his 9800 pro after all :D

... so you went with the $88 solution instead of the $10 answer?

I was thinking that at first...but 88 bucks to upgrade from a socket A proc to a s754 will probably be an ok upgrade with a 9800pro, I was halfway considering it as my AXP 1800 system is getting slightly sluggish

Not so fast with the eye rolling there slick. He ordered a replacement fan but broke something trying to put it on. I didn't see the need to tarnish his image by mentioning that part  He was getting a new mobo without a doubt, why not get a free CPU while he's at it?

2 questions. Is ECS any good? and does this combo support C&Q? Im looking at building a HTPC, and the cooler the better.

Yes ECS is ok..they have straightened up their act considerable the last year.Should be able to go to the mfrgrs website to see if it does support it.
