Nice deal on AMD AM2 X2 4000+ CPU $177.99 Shipped at Newegg

Thu Nov 30, 2006 6:28 am

This is a good deal because AMD no longer makes these guys. It has twice as much cache memory as the AM2 X2 CPUs on the market now, and the same cache size as the FX CPUs. It's multiplier is 10 and OCs very well if you have a nice motherboard. (see my signature)

AMD stopped making the 1MB cache X2 CPUs to cut costs since they're now trying to out-value Intel. I've seen benchmarks where the larger cache alone allows for a7 to 10% bump in performance.

Uhm...just because they dont make them anymore doesnt mean its a good deal. And AMDs design have shown not to benefit much if any of additional cache. And OC very well is a limited show. You can just aswell end up at 2.6, 2.8Ghz etc.

X2 4200+ or E6300 is alot better deal for the same money.

I agree Intel processors currently outperform AMD, however I still think the 4000+ is a better value than a 4200+ or any other X2 model with the 512MB cache per core. Here is a comment from digit-life in a recent review:

"Such an obvious love for cache makes us wonder if gamers are to actually pay attention to AMD performance ratings in the first place. Otherwise they might end up purchasing more expensive and formally faster processors - only to find out that they are being outperformed by lower-rated cheaper ones."

Hence, the 4000+ is a good deal if you're in the market for an AMD AM2 processor.

Can't seem to locate a review of that chip...

I looked but did not see a review either. Since the CPU was only on the market for a short time berofe AMD went to cost cutting there probably wasn't much demand for a review.

Alas, the deal is gone. I ended up buying another one of these CPUs. Both of my X2 4000+ CPUs run stable at 2.98 GHZ. They easily beat a stock FX-62. I'm beginning to think some people with trouble getting beyond 2.6 GHZ may just need a mobo/memory upgrade.
