1½ TB Caviar Green hard-drive for $85, ships free

Mon Mar 29, 2010 4:42 am

Amazon has the 1½ TB Western Digital WD15EARS Caviar Green hard-drive on sale for $85 with free shipping. The same drive is $110 at Newegg.

That's $0.05666 per GB, in case you're wondering. SSDs cost 35 to 50 times as much per GB.

Because price/GB continues to drop, and by the time you actually need it maybe you'll be able to get a 2 TB drive for the same price?

Yes, and that is the only reason I have not yet hit "add to cart". But I still have the page open and ready.

Beware the EARS drive is in Advanced Format so WHS use is no-no until the next version with Windows 7 technologies.

I had to look this up- I know very little about WHS, though I will endear to learn about it in the future, but comment posters in the article state that 'jumpering' the advanced format drives will allow them to work with the current version of WHS.

And upon looking it up, I find that the current WHS is based on Server 2k3, and therefore is in the XP basket of limitations. XP users have the same issue of course. I was just reading this thread thinking that WHS had to be based off Vista for some reason.

Jumper pins 7-8 on the back of the drive or use the WD Align tool.

WHS was developed between 2K3 and Vista, so it looks like a bit of both. The underpinnings is still 2K3 though. The next major version will be based off 2K8 R2 aka Win7 server.

Apparently WD Align won't run under WHS (probably because of Win2K3?). This exact green was on sale in my area last week too and I was tempted until I realized it is AF and I ran into that WGS post. Bottomline: you need to be careful and if you don't want the hassle, better skip it. EADS drives don't have the sale though. :-?
