I'd prefer hitachi toshiba, and ~5400rpm for various reasons, but after being put on hold for over a year due to the duopoly shakeup, I'm done waiting.

I'm happy with one of these drives that I got for $140 this summer. At $90, it's a real bargain.

Just bought one a month ago as a good deal for $127. Could not resist buying another !

Note that Amazon price matched the Newegg deal, but they listed a 1 year warranty on the drive when Newegg had it as a 2 year warranty.

The final tally is in, and I am personally responsible for selling 22 of these from 5pm~7pm eastern, not counting the 4 for myself.

I want a commission!

Anyone else have DOA drives.

Both of mine not seen by Bios or Disk Management.

Delayed boot with a "no physical drive" message.
Drives spin up, click and beep 11 times and spin down.

Hope this not why they were on such a good sale price.

Ugh.

I've always heard horror stories of people getting a lot of DOA drives from Seagate. I had a few wayyyyyy back when, and didn't really have any issues. I can't say I have any recent experience with them though. For the past ~15 years I've been buying WD and Samsung. Realllllllllllllly wish Samsung wouldn't have sold the HDD business to Crapgate.

Probably shipping/warehouse damage. You're better off with a DOA drive than WD that consistently fails a month after purchase, since then you don't have data recovery issues. If it is shipping, then I'd recommend buying drives elsewhere, like amazon.

I had a DOA WD Black once. The funny thing is that it was part of a larger order such that the drive was in its usual filmsy packaging but surrounded by other parts inside a larger box. It should not have bumped into things as much as just a standalone package. I ran WD's diagnostic for any new drive I bought and it failed even the quick test with an error code.

I used the Live chat function and got an advance replacement, but the agent told me that it is not the norm. Oh well, I have been using the replacement drive since.

Newegg went through a stretch a few years ago where their OEM hard drives were atrociously packed (insufficiently sized piece of bubble wrap taped partway around the bare static bag). Haven't noticed any issues lately though; IIRC all of the drives I've bought from them in the past year or two have come in individually padded hard drive shipping boxes or styorofoam hard drive shipping trays.

I did get a DVD drive from them not too long ago that had obviously been banged up a bit (top cover had some dents in it). The drive still worked fine though, so I didn't bother trying to RMA it.

Back up to $159 already ! Wow, I don't ever recall such a huge price fluctuation on HDDs before, other than the dramatic post-flood price hikes. I debated getting a second drive for an hour or so, but I'm glad now that I did get it.

Oh, they were packed well. As you mentioned individual boxes/bubblewrap all inside a bigger box.
My RMA was approved instantly. Just hope they are not "out of stock" when my 2 drives get there.
If so then they just refund my $.

I have had only 1 other drive come in bad. That was a WD.

I would be hard pressed to put the blame on Newegg even if the packaging was pretty bad. The parcel companies are SO rough with packages. Amazes me that most of my things have got to me undamaged.

This has to be a US specific thing; Why do you guys even tolerate it?

We have all the obvious international parcel companies over here (DPD, FedEx, UPS) and when a parcel get banged up you reject it, courier to pay all costs, re-arrange shipping and often even compensation for delay if you paid for timed delivery.

Most etailers insist that if there is any damage you reject your whole shipment; Signing for a damaged package without registering the damage with both the sender and the courier FIRST voids all warranties, period. I believe it's actually law over here as part of the EU's distance selling regulations.

Over here you can sign for the package (but most etailers do not send signiture required) and you have 24 hours to report damage to the shipping company.
I'm in Canada but should be very similar to the US.

Boxes should be able to be banged around a little bit. That is what the rest of the packing material is for.

DOA usually means the retailer mishandled it in their internal picking/packaging process. All the best packaging in the world doesn't help if the drive was mishandled PRIOR to being packed.

I strongly suspect that these DOA drives are not due to shipping.

I mean hey...if three of my bare drives can take a tumble together off a desktop onto a (barely) carpeted floor and still keep working, then how's some little bumping during shipping gonna damage them?

Uh, yeah, that really did happen about a month ago. But so far so good. And that reminds me, it's time to take some fresh backups...

I may have gotten one from Amazon.. I picked up two, and one is fine.. the other is not working.. I need to do more investigating, but we'll see..

I pay extra for FedEx whenever I purchase a hard drive, or anything else fragile. I've heard too many horror stories (and seen the results of) how some UPS employees treat the packages they process (drop-kicking, etc). Probably specific to where you live, so of course, YMMV.

They leave my packages in my neighbor's yard or in my driveway at the gate and drive away.

The ST3000DM001 drive that I bought during this deal is working fine. The one that I bought a few months ago is also still working fine.

My only complaint is that the head seek/park noise of these Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 drives is noticeably louder than the operating noise of my Western Digital Caviar Black drives. It's a light metal scrape/chirp sound.

I have two of these that I took out of the external drive cases because
they were so much cheaper $129 vs $179.

But they seem to keep chirping (parking?) a LOT. You can't update the latest firmware,
and they are not recognized as "ejectable". So I am going to move them to backup duty
once I get a new working pair back from newegg.

Not surprising for a drive that came from an external enclosure. The power management is probably set fairly aggressively in the drive firmware.

There may be a BIOS setting that controls this on a per-port basis.

It's simple enough. Seagate is the largest hard-drive manufacturer in the world. No-one buys Western Digital drives anymore because the equivalent WD drive costs four times as much as the Seagate ST3000DM001 drive in this deal.

That is not an apple to apple comparison.

Seagate are on my semi-eternal **** list since the 11.xx (?) firmware cause my new(ish) drive to crater, losing everything on it. I was NOT pleased!
(I imagine everyone has some story as to why drive company "X" is on their **** list)

Since when is a WD RE an equivalent drive? Wouldn't that need to be a Seagate Constellation series?
