Ryzen 3000 on ITX B450 VRM question

Sun Jun 30, 2019 5:48 pm

So I have been planning new builds for myself and the home server, and I have everything purchased now except for the Ryzen 3000 CPU[s]. After reading that it basically had the best VRM and seeing the price, I went with an MSI B450i Gaming Plus AC board for both systems -- one is replacing my existing server in a Node 304 case, and another is going in an H200. I have good aftermarket air coolers for both.

My question is -- assuming I don't overclock, will this motherboard's VRM be able to deal with a Ryzen 3900X? The Node 304 has the standard two small intakes and one exhaust and I purchased a Noctua U12A for it. The H200 has a SFF PSU with Noctua fans replacing the stock ones in the stock configuration, and I purchased a Dark Rock Pro 4 for it. I do plan to make full use of the CPUs, whether I have them folding, mining, or encoding videos.

Who knows. We don't know anything about the turbo behavior of the 3000 parts. We're living in the day and age where 95 or 105 watt TDP's mean 155 watt+ power draws. We'll find out in a week.

Great board by the way. I have the same one for a R5 2400g Apu build.

Assuming they've got a BIOS update for Ryzen 3000 series I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Are you doing a lot of on-the-fly media transcoding or other compute-heavy workloads on your server? If not, the 3900X is massive overkill for a home server...
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Yes. The server hosts Plex, Minecraft, a Windows virtual machine, and will be running Handbrake or RipBot264.
Edit: I realize Plex (with multiple simultaneous 1080p transcodes) and Handbrake/RipBot264 are the only notable uses for a 12 core, here.

From the 6 core to the 12 core, the Ryzen 3000 offerings are all about ~$41/core. There's no real price penalty for going 12 core over 8. And it seems like AMD has been more strictly adhering to the power usage that they indicate for their CPUs... It is an MSI board though, maybe I should check for MCE? I'm just worried that since I'm not using downdraft coolers, it might get too toasty.
