All but main drive disconnecting

Sat Feb 04, 2017 1:27 pm

Hello. I have a particular problem that has only occurred twice in a month and a half. But I am concerned.
I barely have the system under load and just listening to music and all drives but the main OS drive disappear, that is they disconnect from the system during operation. I checked computer management->Storage,disk management and they are not listed. I have tried using the latest Intel chipset drivers, well almost latest (10.1.1.14). I am running bios version 1802. A restart fixes it.

Could be power problems. Re-seat all power connectors, and try a spare PSU if you have one.

I re-seated all connectors, SATA and Power. If it happens again I have another power supply I can try.
I researched a few other possible issues. The SATA Crucial M500 has an old firmware MU02 latest is MU05, and some of the release notes mention Haswell platform problems. I also found the logs in Event Viewer at the exact moment the drives disconnected. Here is some of it.

What I take from these is IDE port 0, or maybe SATA Port 0? I have either the Bluray burner or the Samsung 850 128GB SSD on that port.

Just thought I would share this new information. Anything can help.

You can try disconnecting one device at a time, starting with the opitcal drive(s), and then run for a while.  Buggy firmware or hardware in a drive could be crashing the controller.

I do suggest updating the firmware on the Crucial SSD as a controller error means the drive probably crashed. As always I'd suggest you back up the data beforehand just in case.

Figuring out which drive matches which port referenced in your event log is a PITA to do. Maybe an expert here knows a simpler method to suggest to confirm it's in fact the Crucial drive that errored.

Don't forget the PSU end of the cables-they are usually more of a problem.
It's also a good idea to save OC profile and go back to BIOS default/safe for a while when trying to locate problems.................

Tonight I updated the Crucial M500 480GB's firmware to the final, from MU02 to MU05. I also did what you suggested and back it up just in case. Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion. I do have a modular power supply. I will re-seat those connectors at the psu end. I also did what you suggested and saved the OC profile.

I guess now is a waiting game to see if the problem will continue into the future. I will periodically check this thread also. And if anything changes I will give an update.

I should've thought of this sooner given your ASUS Z87 board. Are you using the ASUS latching cables, by chance? I have noticed the cables ASUS provided with Z97 boards can push back and disconnect at the motherboard connection point due to the spring latch. You might wriggle each SATA cables into its mainboard port and listen to hear any of them click. If they click then then you will know the cable wasn't fully connected..

I have the long connector end of the SATA cable attached to the motherboard and the right-angle connectors at the drives. If yours is the other way around then my advice probably doesn't matter. Not all SSDs will latch and I've never had an issue with the right-angle connectors, just the long straight connecting portion.

Thankyou for the reply. I took that suggestion and actually now removed the ASUS latch cables from my system, replacing them with new regular SATA cables. Specifically the cables on the Crucial and BDBurner drives.
Also the suspected drive (Crucial M500 480GB) I moved it by itself onto the ASMedia® ASM1061 controller , the dark brown ports on the Asus Z87-pro. I hope to isolate it and just to see what happens.
I will keep updating this thread on the progress.

I have another unfortunate instance of the drives disconnecting this early evening. I have done all that was suggested. This Asus Z87-Pro was purchased June 15 2013. All I can think of is this motherboard is starting to fail. I am thinking of upgrading the motherboard, cpu and ram from the suggestions in the system guide.

Do you have enough native SATA ports to avoid using the ASMedia controller entirely? Or was this in fact the original configuration?

I do actually, the Intel controller has 6 ports. But that was the controller crashing even after trying all the drives exclusively on it. I reconnected my main drive (Samsung 850 Pro 128GB) to the ASMedia again, well that and the game drive (Crucial M5 500 512GB). The ASMedia controller with 2 ports was not crashing.

Hello Again!
I am wondering if I should throw in a PCI-E SATA Controller card to salvage this system? That way I can use the ASMedia controller(2 ports) and disconnect everything from the Intel controller that is crashing on the motherboard.
I am just wondering if this is viable or recommended option?

does the intel controller take over automatically ?

Separate SATA3 controller chip to support those additional ports. I would recommend using the Intel Sata and disable the ASmedia in the UEFI BIOS.

Advanced --> Onboard Devices ---> ASMxxxx set to disable.

Intel.. ports are pulled out from the Intel Z97 PCH (Platform Controller Hub). These ports are fully AHCI and SATA-III compliant .

ASmedia.. The 1061 is connected via PCIe 2.0 lanes pulled out from the PCH. These ports should only be used once all intel sata ports are full and can only be used for hard drives

i'll retest my crucial ssd with the intel controller

Just to clarify my original configuration had the Samsung 850 Pro 128GB SSD (OS Drive) as the only drive attached to the ASMedia controller. And the Crucial M500 512GB SSD, 2xWestern Digital Black 4TB Harddrives and LG Blu ray burner had been attached to the Intel controller.

I recall having similar issues with a Crucial SSD. I remember googling around and the problem is with the Crucial firmware. Even the latest still has issues. The solution that worked for me is to ensure Windows does not allow the drive to be powered off, ever, even when idle. If I recall correctly, the Crucial SSD has a bug where it won't power back up when Windows tries to wake it.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, this is on an old Z97 motherboard (Sandy Bridge i7-2600K, still going strong). The USB ports are starting to flake out, but using an external USB hub with its own power resolves the USB problems.

RP's suggestion is a shot in the dark but it wouldn't hurt anything to try. You can disable sleep mode by going into the power options, selecting your active profile, finding hard drives, and changing the put to sleep option to 0.
