64Gigs Ram, 8x8 or 4x16? Threadripper

Wed Aug 16, 2017 7:39 pm

Just starting to try to sort out my Sept Threadripper build.
Hope by then all the motherboards, coolers and Ram levels will be reviewed.
I know I'm not going to get top speed with 64Gig, but I love my ramdrive.

Not going to try to get 4Ghz or more out of the cpu. Too much heat/watts etc.
My Ryzen 1700 is fine at 3.9Ghz. Expect the same for Threadripper
as they are supposed to be the top 2-5% of production.

Thoughts Welcome,

16 gig sticks.. always leave room for expansion if possible.

If you can save a nice chunk of change with 8x8 then go that route, but if the price is close or the same then ya should always go with the highest density configuration.

4x16 will likely allow for better timings over 8x8 configurations, it'll save ~15 watts on system power, and you have that room for expansion later just incase. Larger densities always hold their value longer as well, should you decide to part the rig out or re-use the RAM some time in the future.

RAM prices will inevitably go down from their current (high) levels and it will probably be much more attractive to upgrade to 128GB in the not-so-distant future. In that case, you should get 4x16 GB.

Performance will probably be a bit better with 8x8 GB, since 16GB dimms are very likely to be dual rank. Price will also be a bit better with 8x8GB.

I recommend 4x16 for future ugradability.

I'd second that advice!
Main machine: Core I7 -2600K @ 4.0Ghz / 16 gig ram / Radeon RX 580 8gb / 500gb toshiba ssd / 5tb hd
Old machine: Core 2 quad Q6600 @ 3ghz / 8 gig ram / Radeon 7870 / 240 gb PNY ssd / 1tb HD

looks like 4x16 is the way to go for my needs.
Had not even thought of the power saving aspect.

Cost is not an issue. My current pc is a 3930 6 core from 2012.
Expect to be using the 16 core Threadripper till it dies.
Don't know where cpus will be going after this.

Thanks!
