I'd be all over sourcing that old board JBI, but I need three slots! :o

Yes, lets hobble a state of the art CPU that has ~30GB/s of memory bandwidth to a system bus that has ~8MB/s of max theoretical bandwidth.

But seriously, about my PSU question, 550W or 650W?

I've seen a C2D motherboard that had ISA slots; it's intended for embedded/industrial systems needing an upgrade. I'm sure they had a bridge chip between them and the southbridge.

The actual output capabilities could be a trivial depending on the brand you buy. For reference, here is what TR was getting for at-the-wall power consumption of various Pentium XE systems (scroll down):

Being a low volume niche product inevitably drives prices up.

yeah, but their test system only had a 7900 GTX, which is a lot less power hungry than a GTX 480. From what I can see online after a quick google search, Nvidia recommends a 350-400W power supply for a 7900GTX, but a 600W power supply for a GTX 480. I'm really on the fence, because Newegg has a great deal on a Rosewill 550 Hive right now for $37 after MIR, but jumping up to a 650W would be around double the price. And sadly my local craigslist doesn't have any suitable PSUs right now.

I settled on the Rosewill Hive 750W. Every online PSU calculator seemed to indicate that a 650 Watt PSU was the minimum for this build, so I got a 750 to give me a little bit of extra margin once I start overclocking. At this point every part is ordered except the case. I have an Idea for what case I want, but it's out of stock everywhere, so I'll wait a little bit and hopefully it gets restocked soon.

I've been actively avoiding obsolete PCI slots since the Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium eliminated all of my need for them in mid-2008. It must have been more than a decade before that when I eliminated obsolete ISA slots.

Yeah, I don't think I ever used those ISA slots, even back in the Slot A days when I had that Soyo motherboard.

I do have a PCI-based M-Audio Revolution and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz in my parts collection; these are still pretty nice discrete soundcards even by modern standards. But my current build has a PCIe Xonar card in it, and I doubt any future builds will have legacy PCI slots to put those old soundcards in.

JBI, I wish my problems were merely physical. My current SB-E system has plenty of working PCI-32 slots for things like my Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1... But upgrading to Windows 10 means that every time Windows boots it 1) installs the driver again, and then immediately 2) uninstalls the driver for not meeting some standard.

Fun stuff. I'm currently using a backup Realtek USB sound card. It... doesn't sound great.

I've seen a P45-based board work, but this was quite some time ago and I don't recall what make/model it was, sorry.

Interestingly, I've just recently come across a Pentium D system, and benched it for fun. As it turns out, Bay Trail Atom is (a lot) faster.

From what I can tell the Pentium Extreme Edition is faster than the fastest Bay Trail at everything except Quad-core Integer speed (because it's only a dual core). I love my Bay Trail mini-PC though. Good chips.

My old 775 rig ran on a Gigabyte P35-DS3L. It was a very popular board and it never let me down. Still works. I always ran Conroe CPUs in it but it has official support for Pentium D which is Netburst iirc. Since it was so popular they are available on ebay pretty cheap.

Note that it doesn't do RAID. You need the DS3R for that.

The first ASUS Rampage Formula actually has that Pentium EE 965 listed in it's supported CPU list.

I recently set up a P45 chipsetted LGA 775 system just for the fun of it. I went with an C2D E8600 CPU, though. Along with 8GB of DDR3 and a GTX 680 video card.

I was pleasantly surprised at how strong the E8600 CPU was. Despite only being a 3.33GHz dual-core, it was nice and responsive browsing the net with Chrome on Win7 x64. What really impressed me was how easily it handled 1440p VP9-encoded Youtube video. 1080p/60 was also completely smooth. The GTX680 obviously doesn't accelerate VP9 at all, so that ancient C2D was doing all of the heavy lifting by itself.

Yeah I was looking at that board but I decided against it because it was too expensive. I just went with a Asus P5Q because it was plentiful, cheap, with a P45 chipset (newer than X48), and it had heatsinks on the VRMs, which Is nice to have when I try to overclock.
