Which LGA 1150 chipset is best?

Mon Feb 05, 2018 5:50 pm

Hey guys. I currently have a Z87 ITX motherboard. I need to replace to do crossfire.
But since my system is a couple years old I am having trouble finding info on the LGA 1150 motherboards.
I need a board that can support at least 2 way crossfire.(RX 580s)

Any suggestions on what chipset or what board to get?

You would need a Z87 or Z97 chipset board, but those are probably the only chipsets that work with your processor and would do crossfire. You should be able to find Z97 Xfire boards pretty easily, but finding them at a good price is another matter.

Prices for any working components that old are exorbitant.
$251½ for a new Asus Z87-Pro (V edition)
$155 for a used Asus Z97-A
You may actually have better availability of old motherboards on your side of the Atlantic:

The prices I am seeing seem similar to what you found. Around 150-250.

Is the z97 better than z87?
And is the Asus z97-a a good board? Crossfire capable and good on board Audio?

Not much difference between the chipsets, I'd suggest going with whichever one gives you the best price.

I have the Z97 Pro powering my rig, the audio is good enough I don't use a sound card anymore.

It is worth noting that ASUS has not published Spectre/Meltdown updated BIOS versions for the Z97 generation. For all the talk about Haswell, I'm pretty sure ASUS doesn't plan to update these boards.

I'd find it hard to spend 150-250 on an "old" board. Does the used market not interested you or were you not finding any options?

At those prices I'd almost consider offloading your CPU and buying a modern motherboard/CPU. Then again, RAM prices. Bah, I guess nevermind lol.
