Basic DDR4 question

Sun May 13, 2018 9:28 pm

Greetings,

In an ASUS Z370-E with 8700K, is there any reason to choose one of these RAM offerings over the other?

https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.a ... 6820232181
https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.a ... 6820232182

The first has 16-18-18-38 timings and second one has 16-16-16-36. At the moment, the faster RAM is on sale with free shipping, which makes that kit nearly identical in price to the slower one ... so, should I just grab the faster one?

Thanks,
K

It depends. I assume there is a budget for this build. I am also making the assumption that you are purposely opting to leave two memory slot open and unused. The better question I think you should be asking, pardon my audacity, is whether it is a better bang for your buck. There are several components in a system that affect different functions of the performance of the overall system. System memory seems at current prices to offer diminishing returns if you could invest the bare required minimum for system memory and devote the difference into a better graphics cards for gaming, better and faster storage, or even liquid cooling for higher over-clocking. In terms of performance/price, system memory is the highest fruit, and I think you should always optimize other components for improvements and leave system memory for last, given the current market situation.

Unless you are going for the best of the best, and MONEY IS NO OBJECT, in fact, it is burning a hole in your pocket, and you are financially secure to spend it, then even then it doesn't make sense to make this decision because it would be better to buy four modules at the highest overclocked speed, e.g- 4000 Mhz. You must be absolutely certain that you are opening a can of worms. Because overclocking memory is an even trickier business than a CPU. It is not as rosy as you are led to believe. You seem to be penny wise, pound foolish if you are willing to spend so much money on this just to save on shipping when a bigger delta of performance per price could be achieved elsewhere.

My two cents. We wouldn't be doing right by you if we didn't advise you to get the best bang for your buck.

I perhaps should have been clearer that these are Canadian dollars, in case perhaps you or others might read them as US dollars. Really it was a technical question about any difference between the two that might make the faster RAM not appropriate in the Z370 chipset.

FWIW, the slower of the two is exactly the RAM recommended in the current TR system guide "Sweeter Spot" ... Here is the US link:
https://www.qksrv.net/links/1800524/type/am/https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231941.

The system I'm building is essentially that "Sweeter Spot", though I prefer the Asus board instead of the GIgabyte. Ya, it's a bit of a premium system, but I upgrade infrequently and it's within my budget. My question wasn't really about cost but about making sure there wasn't something technically the matter with choosing the 16-16-16-36.

Thanks,
K

Nah, you wouldn't notice a difference in either. Get what you want, you'll be happy with either.

Yes, grab the faster kit. Intel CPUs mostly aren't picky about the more pedestrian RAM kits, so it should be fire and forget.

And man, those Canadian Pesos...
