Motherboard for Haswell

Sat Aug 04, 2018 10:04 pm

The family member to whom I gave my old Haswell system may have killed the Gryphon Z87 motherboard. Should I spend $113 for a new Q87M-E/CSM or should I use this as an excuse to get a Ryzen 7 2700X CPU, socket-AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory? The selection of replacement LGA1150 motherboards available today seems rather limited. Is there a better motherboard choice?

The system components other than the Gryphon Z87 are:
Core i7-4770K
Corsair H70
2x 8 GiB PC3-14900 (DDR3-1866)
Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E
GeForce GTX980Ti 6GiB
½ TB Samsung 840 SSD
2x 3 TB Seagate Barracuda HD
SeaSonic SS-660XP2
3840x2160 @60Hz Television
Windows 10 Home
· R7-5800X, Liquid Freezer II 280, RoG Strix X570-E, 64GiB PC4-28800, Suprim Liquid RTX4090, 2TB SX8200Pro +4TB S860 +NAS, Define 7 Compact, Super Flower SF-1000F14TP, S3220DGF +32UD99, FC900R OE, DeathAdder2

If you could get rid of the old CPU and DDR3 for a reasonable price on ebay, go for Ryzen.

Second selling them on Ebay, the NA userbase have always been suckers willing to spend outrageous sums on used semi-outdated PC stuff without warranty. Your 4770K should net you at least $200, and the 16GB DDR3 $80. Depending on your luck, even with the inflated DDR4 prices and after Ebay's cut you can be looking at a new 2600X/B450/16GB DDR4 setup for pretty cheap.
