I did the same. And that exact heatsink. I actually still have a couple unopened.

I had an unit that was used to replace the crappy NB HSF on my old EpoX Nforce 4 board.

I also used them to replace failed fans on a couple of GeForce 2 cards back in the day. Meant you couldn't use the adjacent 2 PCI slots, but with a full ATX motherboard there were typically enough PCI slots that you still had enough.

Back in the day I had an old ASUS M2N32 Sli Deluxe mobo (from 2006) that died from capacitor plague in 2009. It showed every sign of cap plague and behaved like it.

I still love Thermalright. After confirming several spec questions with them (they responded to me within six hours from Germany via e-mail, I was quite impressed), I took one of the greatest pieces of hardware I've ever purchased:



The Thermalright TRUE Black 120, manufacured in 2008, a six-pipe copper `sink (then nickel plated and black anodized), originally for Sockets LGA775 and AM2 (an updated mounting kit was released, which has served with every Intel socket since), and mounted it -on an i9-9900K. Using two Noctua Redux 1300rpm (3-pin, so always running at max speed). Thermalright told me the unit can dissipate a massive 240 watts, which was unheard of eleven years ago. I believe them. Running all eight cores at 4.7GHz, 100% CPU load, no core goes higher than 80C. I have used this unit on one Core 2 Duo, three Core 2 Quads, an i5(Sandy), two i7s(Sandy and Devil's Canyon, and now the i9. How can you not like that?

Ned, I think it probably will with one, but the i9 can be an extreme case. I'm using about 160-165 watts with the CPU at the mentioned speeds, and I'm using a CPU known for power consumption and some heat, so I asked in advance. This also tells me it'll handle a Ryzen 7 2700X with ease.

In use on the rig in my sig. Note I have two Geforce GTX 1070 Founder's Edition cards in there too, and it's still staying at that 80C temp. Of course, I'm pretty picky about my cooling fan design and choices for my case, too.

On my 4790K?? No, I'm looking at just how many times I can reuse this (and the P182) in builds. Not that I'm planning one anytime soon.

Unless you've got the desire and the budget to put together a HEDT system you'll probably never get even close to needing that. TDPs of mainstream CPUs have been trending downwards for a few years now.
