Samsung discontinuing B-Die RAM

Tue May 07, 2019 9:45 am

Could be bad news for overclockers and RyZen users.

Samsung’s latest product guide has been modified, therefore revealing Samsung’s choice to discontinue production of B-Die memory. Samsung’s product guide also reveals continued production of A-Die and M-Die memory types, as well as UDIMMs, will become available by Q2 2019.

Confirmed.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/14327/sa ... dr4-memory

For many years leading DRAM module manufacturers have used Samsung’s B-die 8 Gb memory chips for their fastest and most advanced DIMMs. This quarter Samsung intends to discontinue production of B-die, forcing its partners to find a worthy replacement.

Santa Clara California:

Intel Corporation announced a massive patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung, Inc. seeking damages in the billions of dollars. The complaint filed in a California federal court alleges that Samsung knowingly and willfully infringed Intel's patents in the area of cancelling products.

When reached for comment, Intel CEO Bob Swan was quoted as saying: "If those idiots want to steal our product cancellation technology, then WE'LL CANCEL THEM IN COURT!"

This story is developing.

On topic: Ugh. Samsung is having a rough couple quarters. You'd think these dies would be profit leaders...I guess the higher ASP doesn't offset the production costs?

On chuckula: I lol'd. Well done sir.

Never been in a chip plant, so totally spitballing.

What are the power requirements for a fully on-line UPS (i.e. all primary power comes from the UPS directly, not from utility feed) to sustain a chip plant until backup generation can replace the utility feed? Is it even possible? If it is, does the cost/benefit make sense?
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

UPSes can be large enough to power a small city.

The Hwaseong facility is smaller than Samsung's headquarters in Suwon and another satellite operation in Pyeongtaek.

10,000 square meters of solar panels has a peak output of about 2 MW. Average daily production is significantly less, since the sun doesn't shine as much on cloudy days and not at all at night.

I wonder if they have a SLA with their electricity provider...
