Which MB for Ryzen 3900?

Tue Jul 16, 2019 10:43 am

I have a Crosshair VI, a 1700X and 4x16GB Samsung B-die ECC. I need to (a) upgrade to 3900X and (b) use the 1700X for my home server. So I will need a MB (I already have some cheap RAM). The prices on X570 are insane. But, I can afford it if necessary/worth it. I see the following options:
1. ROG Strix X570-E ($350 local price)
2. ROG Strix X470-F ($200 local price)
3. Put the 3900X on the Crosshair VI and buy a cheap B450 for the home server ($150 local price).

I want ASUS because I know they have ECC support (tested and works on my Crosshair VI).

What would you do?

I can't see anything wrong with your third option other than not gaining a second m.2 slot, but I don't think you'd lose much going with the Strix X470-F instead of the X570 board if you're willing to spend the $50 extra. It has a stout VRM and a pretty good feature set otherwise. I think it's one of the best value X470 boards out there for an enthusiast.

US$70 Asus Tuf B450M-Plus Gaming
or US$360 Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero X570

I'd suggest putting the $290 difference in the bank for now.

Thanks to both for your feedback. I think I'll go with a reasonably priced B450. The ROG B450 costs an extra $40 here ($140 vs $100, local prices) but has some extras that seem worth it: (a) Intel ethernet, (b) 2xM.2 (nice for a server) and (c) significantly better VRMs. There is also a much better ALC1220 codec for sound, which doesn't matter for me right now but may matter if at some point I connect the server to speakers...

In any case right now there is almost no availability for the 3900X, so I'll just keep waiting.

Yeah, unless you have specific need/want to run a PCI Express Gen 4 device, I'd just get the cheaper one. There's other, small, benefits to X570, but not $200 worth in my opinion.

I don't see why you'd want anything more than a good B450 for the 3900 anyway. It does pretty much everything you'd want from the X470 at half the price and most of the overclocking/undervolting tests run on Zen2 show that the XFR+ auto-clocking is more effective than typical overclocks anyway.

It's not that you can't overclock on a B450, it's just that you don't need to go bonkers on the best VRMs for LN2 cooling at the upper 0.001% of record-breaking overclock attempts.XFR+ will manage cores and clocks better than an all-core manual overclock, and it'll do so without raising the voltage, stressing the VRMs, or doubling the power consumption.

MSI's max line are an option (3000-series ready out of the box), not sure on availability of those yet. The other option is just anything with USB BIOS flashback like the TUF or MSI's Mortar/Tomahawk boards.

The Gigabyte Gaming X is a cheap X570 alternative, I'm pretty happy with mine for $160. Plus, PCIe 4.

The fan in the chipset heatsink is annoying in its existence, but it's effectively inaudible except at boot time in my experience so far.
