X299 Motherboard Recommendation for i9-10900X?

Mon Jan 20, 2020 12:44 am

I looking at building a workstation based on an i9-10900X processor for some simulation code that needs both high single threaded CPU performance and memory bandwidth (4+ memory channels) with at least 8 cores. Fast memory might help with the simulations I am planning. Some of the simulation codes were likely compiled with Intel's MKL.

Does anyone have any motherboard recommendations for the i9-10900X?

Regardless of the Intel optimized code, can you test your simulation on one of the Ryzen based cloud platforms linked here:

Unless your code is specifically using AVX-512, Ryzen might offer similar or better performance than Intel while consuming lower power.

Unfortunately, most people who would give you a good technical answer have left the site.

Something like this https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/WS-X299-PRO-SE/ or one of it's big brothers with 10G LAN ports. Likely run you about $450 US right now.

You might find this discussion helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/8 ... _services/

Unless your place of work mandates that you can only buy Intel, it would be prudent to test your simulation code on cheap Intel and Ryzen instances with comparable specs to see if Intel really does give better performance per dollar. As I mentioned before, even Intel optimized code might run very well on Ryzen and could outperform an overpriced Intel HEDT CPU based on sheer number of cores for about the same or even lower price.
