SLI vs 45nm - Breakdown in Communication?

Mon Dec 17, 2007 1:22 pm

I was always under the assumption that Intel and Nvidia had a close knit relationship similar to, but probably not quite to the level of, AMD and ATI. Yet, we see a situation where Intel's new P35 and X38 chipsets are without SLI support (and went with Crossfire, a big advantage for ATI), and Nvidia's 680i chipset can't handle Intel's new 45nm processors that are coming out (though this is being addressed with 780i).

Was this some sort of tit for tat? Nvidia didn't give Intel its SLI tech, so Intel didn't let Nvidia in on 45nm support? Was it an unintentional breakdown in communication? Did each company just not look far enough ahead into the future? Or was it something else entirely?

Probably a bit of everything, plus some technical incompetence as mentioned here.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.
