Opinion on a MoBo

Fri Jan 04, 2008 9:38 pm

Can anyone tell my anything about this MoBo?

MSI P6N SLI-FI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813130082

It seems to suit my needs for its price, but I fear hidden faults. I need a mobo for around $100 (possibly a little more) that has at least 1 PCIe port, can support an Intel Celeron D 330 CPU (don't want to have to buy a new processor until I must), and has slots for dual channel DDR2 Memory (at the least). I already have a Radeon 1650pro GPU but I want to upgrade that asap. Want the most bang for my buck.

Need help, am Noob.

Never used that MSI board so I cant really comment on it.

I have used a bunch of gigabyte stuff in the last few months and all of them have been flawless. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128059

I've never used an MSI board, so I really can't comment other than telling you to look at some reviews for the board.

I do agree with Hance that the Gigabyte boards are pretty solid.

I prefer Intel chipset stability. With a $100 price you really can't go wrong with the GA-P35-DS3L.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

Some Celeron D CPUs came in a Socket 478 package - yours is LGA 775, right?
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Oh, derFunk is right. The 330 seems to be the ones that come in 2 flavours. Definitely double check. CPU-Z will help.

Wow, that was alot of help. That CPUID thing probably just saved me a bundle. Yes my CPU is a socket 478 so I guess I need to replace that too. Thanks for the suggestion of Gigabyte, I'll look through their stuff. Another question then, I already knew I needed new RAM but does anyone have any helpful hints when it comes to selecting memory? On the MoBo specs it says that its "Memory Standard" is DDR2 1066 what specifically does the 1066 mean. also is says that the number of memory slots is 4A - 240pin. I get the 4 and the 240pin, but the A with the little line above it (does that mean amps?) only apears on some MoBo's, what does it mean?

Hey I was just looking at my MoBo and noticed something. It has three PCI ports which kind of screwed me because I couldn't add a PCIe x16 GPU. but I was a little confused as the case had removable covers for 4 slots. I didn't think much of it the first time I looked but I just noticed that the board seems to have little holes and whatnot that look like they could support another slot. they are also a little further along the board, where a PCIe x16 slot would be. Is it possible to add a slot? Its not something I've heard of so I thought I would bring it up. Oh and what is Cas Latency and should I worry about it when looking at MoBo's?
