Best chipset for performance and value

Tue Nov 25, 2008 10:01 pm

Hello,
Looking to get a new mobo because the southbridge went out on my Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe.
I do a lot of gaming and want a board thats priced fairly but kicks a$$. I only want to spend $200 tops on a new mobo and up to $325 to $350 for a new mobo/cpu/ram.
Whats the best board/chpset out there for gaming that wont break the bank?
I`ll be running 1 8800 GTX Gpu card and want to get a dual core processer.
I was going to pay $220 for a bundle at Compusa, but after looking over the chipset for that bundle, I think I can do better for my money.
Is this a good board for the money? http://www.compusa.com/applications/sea ... -BB-103202

I would go for the Intel E8400 and a P43 or P45 motherboard combo. I'm partial toward Gigabyte and Asus boards myself, but which exact board is best depends on what features you are looking for.

Edit: this combo deal looks good. Asus P5Q Pro and E8400 for $250. That leaves you with enough extra cash to pick up a 2x2GB DDR2 kit.

Take at look at Intel's P45 or P43 chipset and the C2D E8400 or E8500 processor with 2x2 GiB of PC2-6400 DDR2 memory.

$80 +0 Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L P43 motherboard. I also like the Asus P5Q Pro with P45, RAID and an extra PCIe slot.
$165 +0 Intel C2D E8400 3.0 GHz Wolfdale w/ HSF
$45 +0 2x2 GiB PC2-6400 DDR2-800
======
$290, total delivered price.

How does the nForce 750I chipset compare to the P43 & P45?
Tiger Direct has a good board with this chipset.
