He probably looked at your post count, and/or mis-read the year as 2009 instead of 2008...

I'm not considering you a newbie at all, I'm welcoming you to the forum; that is, welcoming you as a newly participating member of the forum. I certainly wasn't a newbie when I joined the TR forums, first and second time, nor when I joined the [H] forums long before that.

As for what I do to put a roof over my head and food on my plate, how would that relate to what my interets are? It's a very lucky man that does for a living what he enjoys.

I didn't read the year at all; it's irrelevent when his first posts are within this thread. He's a newly participating member as of today, regardless of when he joined .

This is a serious defect. I'm surprised it isn't causing a bit more distress.

The question is, how do we know it will be fixed? I haven't noticed Foxconn or Intel release any official statement about their plans to fix it.

I was getting the impression that NO lga1156 was safe. You are positing that the ASUS sockets are safe?

RTFA? Asus does not make sockets, only a handful of OEMs make them. The largest one being Foxconn (this can be confusing because Foxconn makes motherboards too, but they OEM a bunch of other stuff one of which is CPU sockets) which means this has the potential to be a prevalent problem.

Has anyone gotten a response from Asus, Foxconn and/or Gigabyte concerning this problem?

This has the potential to affect everyone -- not just extreme over-clockers. Uneven contact between the socket pins and the CPU pads may not be a serious problem at stock processor speeds; however, improper contact WILL increase resistance which WILL cause additional heating and CAN potentially cause contact failure. Each failure exacerbates the problem, making more failures more probable. At some point, the computer will become erratic or stop functioning altogether and/or the processor will be damaged.

Welcome to the Dark side! And congrats on busting your lurker cherry

This is a reason for me NOT to upgrade to i5 this holiday season. Even if it does not effect normal users today, poor contact will most definitely shorten the life of the product. With the time between upgrading computers lengthening it is more important than ever that my PC's have some longevity.

I didn't take any offense from your comment I'm just saying plenty of people get presumptuous about their elitism sometimes.

My thoughts are with dagwood for the rest though, I'm not so sure I'd be upgrading to anything other than 1366, and certainly not 1156 for a while if it's an intel system as I build both. I'll stick to building econobox's for my customers when I am lazy anyway.

Turns out I may have been bitten by this defect and I was merely trying to assemble the machine. See my post here: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=68768 I've since returned the board to Newegg but I have looked at the processor I installed in it and I can see quite a few pads that have little to no contact markings. I can't say for sure that's the cause of this board's failure but it's definitely a possibility.

Not really meaning to beat a dead horse, but Gigabyte has just announced P55A-series motherboards that, among other features, include Lotes sockets in place of the Foxconn sockets used in the original boards.

What's scary is that even though the clamp now says LOTES, the plastic piece covering the socket still says Foxconn.
