Careful what you wish for...

(None of my kids have ended up in software development, in spite of one of them even getting a degree in it.)

Edit: And I'm not sure why you're so excited about a guy who wrote what amounted to an all-but-forgotten, barely even footnote-worthy piece of 8-bit computing history. I was just trying to point out that a single individual can do interesting things, you just need to stay focused.

Getting back on topic, how important is HDR right now? Yes I know I said I'm wanting 4K mainly so I can have more applications on screen at once, but I do play games and watch videos online.

From some of the stuff I've been reading, I find it to be really strange that a lot of new 4K monitors don't have "real" 10-bit HDR while many much cheaper 4K TVs do. One would think that a computer display that goes for 4 figures would have this.

Now that said I'm thinking that it will mostly be a few years before I have to really worry about this since it will be awhile before I'll be streaming 4K content anyway.

You're focusing on minutiae again. Unless you're a AV connoisseur, or one of your priorities is impressing your AV connoisseur friends, this issue is lost in the noise.

Thanks, I was wondering if this was really a non-issue, or for that matter if I would even care at all.

What is it that you really want to do? Set some priorities, and focus on them. Are you serious about the "learn how to do software development" angle, or not? There are people here willing to help you do that, but only if you are serious about it and have the self-control to keep yourself from going off on 4-day tangents about things like needing a 4K display.

Ask questions in the GCC thread if you get stuck.

As it turns out my GTX 970 doesn't even support 10-bit color or HDR anyway. And I really don't care since the main reason I'm even looking at 40" to 43" 4K displays to begin with is simply to make my life easier to learn programming and/or doing more advanced stuff.

What is this thing people have against large displays? I mean I had folks look at me funny after I tell them I'm using a 30" monitor even after I explain that I'm using 2560x1600 resolution as well. I mean don't get me wrong, I can see those who simply don't have the room or the money to spare. But after I've told the nurse at the office of of the non-profit that does my housing what I'm planning to get, she look at me really funny like "WTF 43" ON A DESKTOP?"

Funny but I had the same problem back when I started using dual monitors....

Many of us remember when a 19" CRT was considered fairly luxurious (back when 15" and 17" was the norm).

40+ is still a "nice to have", not a "need".

It's actually kind of humorous at work because we all have these tiny desks (downtown Chicago so square footage is at a premium), with giant monitors that basically take up the entire desk.

The solution there is to mount the large monitor to an arm so that it floats above the desk, leaving the whole surface free for relatively-short stuff.

Good idea. Not sure how well that would work; there's a partition attached to the back of the desk. The partition is kind of superfluous though, given that the monitor itself is effectively a partition. I'll have to look at whether the partition is removable, and see if I can get them to order me an arm.

Yeah I remembered those days. And now we can get a 23" 1080p for what, $129 or less?

For a good IPS one, maybe. Last TN monitor I bought was a 24" 1080p and it was $80 delivered.

Not bad at all, useful for a budget build anyway.
