Free Photo Editing Software

Sun Jun 26, 2016 9:15 am

So basically I have a few .jpg from old scanned photos (like from the 60's) and would like to stitch them together.

Anything out there that's free or trial that could do that?

edit - used this and worked great

I've been using a very old version of Canon's Photostich program. I'll give that one a try.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried Hugin? It's apparently cross-platform (Windows/Linux/Mac).

I have used Hugin. Its very capable, and has more features, but not quite as easy to use as ICE or Photostich, and it can be a little buggy.

It allows the user to control a lot of the process, you can set control points, gray levels etc. So if you need the advanced features, its a great free tool.

How safe is that? I mean do you give up the rights to your photo? You might one day find your photo in a CD full of "stock" pictures.
I'm clueless about computers.

I've always thought Gimp is very robust, with a lot of the tools you'd expect from something like Photoshop, but it can be a bit difficult to pick up and for simple stuff it can be a bit of overkill. For basic stuff Paint.net is fine in my books...I'm not photo editing master though.

I'd double down on Gimp. It has been and will likely be around forever, so whatever time you spend learning it, will not be wasted.

Gimp is very capable, but can be somewhat non-intuitive. I've been using it for years, and I still find it frustrating whenever I need to do something with it that I haven't done before.

Getting back to the original topic of this thread, I'm not sure if there are any good photo stitching plugins for it.
