1440 monitors?

Sun Apr 02, 2017 10:13 am

I noticed a few sub 300 dollar 1440 IPS monitors on amazon lately; I'll link a few in comments. Most of the reviews I'm finding online are for higher end stuff though, and I just do not have 500 bucks to drop on a monitor. Are any of these worth buying?

Viewsonic 24" 1440

I'm thinking about one of those as my primary and using my current 20 or 22 1080p as a secondary monitor. I have a similar setup at work and it is marvelous. I don't want bigger than 24 just due to desk space concerns but I'd like higher resolution than what I have now.

24" 1440p is fine if you're okay with DPI scaling in whatever OS you're using. At native 100% scaling it's not exactly easy on the eyes though, unless you have pin-sharp, better-than-20:20 vision of youth.

27" 1440p is towards the upper end of comfortable DPI. It's the equivalent pixel size to a 17.3" 1080p laptop panel. Okay for laptops where the screen is much closer to you, not so great for a desktop monitor which is anything from 50-100% further away from you.

Not to be a smartass but eyestrain is nothing to mess with. Get a bigger desk, as the resolution goes up so should the screen size as well. I have to look again at Monoprice and Newegg, but I would have sworn that both had 27" 1440p displays for well under $500.

I have a 28" 4K at work. At native resolution text is microscopic.

KDE does an OK job of scaling for high DPI (some of the system menus/notifications are a little wonky looking but everything is functional and application fonts are beautiful). The annoyance is that you can't change the DPI and have it fully take effect without restarting KDE, so whenever I work from home (where I have only a run-of-the-mill 21.5" 1920x1080) or go back to the office after working at home, I have to close and reopen everything.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I have a Dell Ultrasharp 25" 1440 (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/prod ... u=210-AJIY) as my center monitor and have Win10 scaling set to 125% and it looks fine to me though I mostly use it for gaming and do most reading on the 1080s on the sides (which I have Firefox scaling to 125 or 133% on anyways).
Main rig: Ryzen 3600X, R9 290@1100MHz, 16GB@2933MHz, 1080-1440-1080 Ultrasharps.

Windows Runtime apps scale great, but with win32 apps it's a crapshoot. Some popular stuff is just embarrassing. But a lot of things that had issues (if their developers even care) don't anymore.

Creators Update adds new scaling tech for win32 apps, but I think it's only really for whitelisted apps...when I've tried to set it myself on other stuff I've had poor results.

I just spent over a month researching monitors for a friend. It was a confusing mess trying to find something decent that wasn't $500 or more. She ended up going with this one. Its just over your $300 budget but worth the extra $30 as far as I am concerned.

Acer UM.HX2AA.D03 27" Widescreen LCD 2560x1440
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1

Once I got her system up and running with a new GPU and this monitor I liked it so much I got one for myself.

Neither one of us has had an issue in the 5 to 6 weeks since we received them. No dead pixels, light bleed, etc.

This, basically.

Microsoft apps and RT apps work, but realistically the vast majority of internet websites have issues, loads of common apps that you'll consider "everyday necessities" don't scale gracefully and you'll struggle with practically anything that's more than 3 years old.

For scaling to be flawless, raster graphics have to be 100% replaced with vector graphics. Sadly, most applications, most interfaces, most webpages, most games - pretty much most everything relies on raster graphics or raster text for something, somewhere. and even if 99% of that application/page/game works fine, that one thing that doesn't will stick out like a sore thumb.

So go 27" or go down to 1200p basically? If i want everything to be usable?

I'll do some rearranging and see; if I can move my laser printer and phone it might work.

Yep, older programs will usually not scale up their UI elements with the Win10 scaling hints.

27" 1440p works fine for me on my desktop, but I had to download custom large button control bar icons for MPC-HC on my 13.3" 3200x1600 laptop.

Office, Notepad++, all my Metro apps and the browsers I use (Vivaldi) work fine on both. It's mostly the older programs that assume a fixed dpi and have fixed size UI elements that run into trouble.

Does $219 fit your budget? That's about as cheap as you're going to find a 27" 2560x1440 IPS/PLS or VA monitor.

WOW that is cheap.

I'm willing to up to 300ish, I just can't afford one of those sleek sexy Ultrasharps (I wish).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NZTKOQI/re ... J3PZ6&th=1 It's 25 so not much bigger than 24...

I dont' *have* have a 1440, but I'm using a pretty generic not so great 21" 1080 that could stand an upgrade. 1200 would still be nicer than what I've got

If you want to game, I would prioritize 144Hz over 1440P. Greater resolution is nice. Greater fluidity is HUGE.

Just to add to earlier
https://blogs.windows.com/buildingapps/ ... rs-update/
Much of it is for docked multimon systems, but also GDI apps are getting some love
“System (enhanced)” DPI scaling

While we want to make it as easy as possible for you to update your applications to handle DPI scaling properly, we fully recognize that there are many applications that can never be updated, for various reasons. For this class of applications, we’re looking at ways that Windows can do a better job of automatically DPI scaling. In the Creators Update you’ll see the first version of this work.

Naturally much more at source, but I didn't want to post the whole thing here.

BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT USING MULTIPLE MONITORS WITH VASTLY DIFFERENT DPIs. On Win7 for my office machine you can set ONE dpi scale that's applied to all monitors. Say that's 100% for easy example. One of my monitors is a 24" 1080p (92dpi) and the other is a 27" 1440p (109dpi). When I drag a window from the 27" monitor to the 24" monitor it gets 18% larger (109/92). From some quick googling, it sounds like in Win8.1 and Win10 you can set DPI scaling on a per monitor basis. So if you're [presumably] running Win10, this is a non issue.

Also, I think most people (myself included) have gotten pretty used to the ~24" 1080p look of things. Certainly that's what the majority of PC software and web content is designed for. When you start getting higher ~100dpi things on screen get pretty small without using DPI scaling. DPI scaling has its known quirks. IMO, 27" 1440p is great.

This Acer 27" 1440p IPS is the younger brother to mine. Pretty sure I've seen it in the $260-$280 range recently.

Why not both? I have a 144 Hz 27" 1440p G-Sync monitor. They have 165 Hz IPS models now, too.

But I'm guessing that at OP's budget, he's going to have to prioritize.

Even though I game a lot, 1080p is woefully inadequate for my desktopping these days. I have 2x1440p monitors and want more real estate.

My take is that AMD cards (right now) are too slow to take advantage of 144 Hz monitors and nvidia setups (with G-sync) are too expensive for budget builds.

There are some decently priced 75/90Hz Freesync monitors but those tend to not have the range to do LFC.

While I see where you're coming from, there are plenty of games out there (and people that play them) that aren't hard to peg a 1440p 144Hz monitor even with a ~$120 GPU. (think F2P games). It's also not absolutely necessary to play the most demanding games with all visual settings on Uber/Ultra/Max which is what most benchmarks use. Most gamers upgrade GPUs every 2-3 years, but keep monitors through multiple upgrades. If anything, I see a monitor as something you can "grow into". That's a harder pill to swallow lately given the recent explosion of improvements in the monitor market (VRR / HDR / high resolution) but it's still worth spending a little extra to get a monitor you'll be happy with for the foreseeable future.

I see your point, but how valuable is it to play a casual game at 144 fps (assuming the game engine can even handle it)?

My experience has been that 120 Hz+ has been very beneficial to me in fast paced online FPS games (I mainly play Overwatch) and not particularly useful in RTS/MOBA games (I play HOTS). In single player games, I have found VRR to be much more useful than the max refresh available, as some games break above 60 fps (Skyrim), some games are capped at 60 (HLD, NieR: Automata), and some games will have a varying frame rate throughout the session (Witcher 3, GTA V, etc). The lower bound of a VRR monitor is also fairly important to me, some cinematics and/or games run at 30 fps even today and can stutter or tear if I don't have g-sync on.

I do find having 120 Hz great for video playback, as it handles 24, 30 and 60 fps content very gracefully. Now you could set up custom refresh profiles in your media player app (MPC-HC lets you do this) to run 72/60/60 Hz respectively, so you don't need to have 120 Hz+ capability on your monitor, but that is a hassle, and not a solution for browser based playback or closed-ecosystem apps. I could also enable G-sync for video playback, but instead, 120 Hz is a 'set it and forget it' solution for me.

Re: your last point, monitors are advancing much faster right now than at any point in the past 10 years. It doesn't make sense for me to advise 'future-proofing' at the expense of cost right now. Get what suits your current needs, because in 12 months*, there will be something cheaper/faster/better (quantum dots, high dpi, high refresh, VRR, hi-color def, AMOLED, you name it).

* Used to be a good monitor from 5 years ago was as good as a good monitor today, but that's not true now, and it won't be true for another couple years to come, until we reach a new equilibirum/saturation point.

See CS:GO, Planetside, Overwatch, UT4, maybe Doom. The games that benefit most from high framerates don't tend to be the ones that take a monster card to get there.

"Crossover" sells a 27" IPS 100hz monitor for $340, but I can't speak to the response times or quality:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 2RY3MK9378

There are a bunch of TN monitors between $300-400 with similar specs.

Note that 100+Hz doesn't necessarily mean that you expect to cap your FPS that high, but the extra fluidity helps for as high as you can go and reduces the impact of tearing.

$371 on newegg gets you a 27" 1440P IPS from Crossover that "overclocks to 100hz" with FreeSync. No idea how well that unit delivers, of course.

At the $300 price point I would look at fast TN screens and see if you can find a deal on a TN screen with FreeSync and good specs. If your monitor budget is $300, GSync is out of the question and AMD's cheaper GPU offerings (and hopefully cheaper VEGA variants) could be appealing. TN is cheaper than IPS (especially for fast screens), so that's a good place to start.

For the most part this is true. I have a 13" 1080p notebook attached to my 27" 1440p monitor. Moving windows of modern apps between displays works fine, and they use the DPI of the display where you move it. I haven't personally encountered anything that hasn't at least fuzzily-scaled itself on the 13" display, but I'm sure there's something out there that may look strange. High-DPI display compatibility is a great reason to move to Windows 10 if you're still clinging to Win7.

That Viewsonic looks like a good selection. I prefer 27" 1440p to keep 100% scaling on the desktop to smaller 1440p if at all possible.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Re: 1440 monitors?

Wound up getting a good deal on a Dell Ultrasharp 25" 1440 from a local shop going out of business (I am a vulture!).

OMG. This is the best monitor I've ever used and I'm mad I didn't buy one sooner.

NOW, to save up and buy a 27" 4k next year and turn this one vertical as a secondary monitor.
Ugly people have sex all the time. We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion humans if you had to be beautiful to get laid.
