Sony a6000 unable to display

Sat Jul 22, 2017 11:27 am

I'm having an issue on my Sony a6000 that google search isn't giving me the same results for when I search it. I connect the camera via USB to my computer to preview images and delete the ones I don't want. Aka, I'm using my computer to delete images from the memory card in the camera. When I disconnect the camera from the computer and look at the photos on the camera, any photos I deleted via the computer show up as a grey screen with the message "Unable to Display". Almost like the camera thinks there should still be a picture there, but obviously it's not.

There must be a simple fix to this, right?

Sounds like there is meta data being stored somewhere that the camera is reading; are you sure you've looked at the card with all hidden files visible? You may have to look at the card via a proper card reader and not via the camera. Or perhaps use some desktop software Sony provides that knows how to fiddle with its magic bits..

Worst case you could copy all the pictures off the card, wipe the card, and then copy back the ones you want.

Are you connecting via MTP, or as a USB mass storage device? I've noticed quite a bit of wonkiness with MTP in general (not on your specific camera, since I don't own it; I mean with MTP devices in general). Changes made to the internal memory via MTP aren't always correctly reflected on the device, and vice-versa. It would seem that there are a lot of really bad MTP implementations out there.

@UberGerbil - Yes, I have hidden files visible. Nothing else in the DCIM folder (where the photos are stored) besides the photos themselves. It's the same whether I'm connected via USB or card reader.

@JBI - I typically connect via USB and open the camera drive from My Computer then navigate to the DCIM folder where the photos are stored, so I'd guess I'm connecting as a USB mass storage device.

It will still show up under My Computer regardless of whether it is using mass storage protocol or MTP.

If there isn't a setting in the camera to control the USB connection mode, or if changing the connection mode does not help, try using an external card reader.
