Neutronbeam wrote:Read some of the articles. There are a few specifications you need to research and be careful about, but televisions are getting better and cheaper faster than monitors, IMHO. You can get 40" 4K TV for so much less than a monitor and it doesn't have to be a no-name brand...

That was pretty much my reaction. I assume the usual suspects do it fine but I honestly don't know.
The TV still makes old content look fantastic. I like it in the other room for overnight but it'd be great with my PC as a secondary option too so...blah.

I'm more or less looking at 40" 4k mainly for productivity uses as I'm not sure about gaming at that resolution on a GTX 970 even with older/less demanding games. As of now I'm fine with 1440p/1600p anyway, it's the ability to have four windows opened in a quad 1080p I'm really wanting anyway.

- Philips BDM4065UC: 40-inch MVA panel, vibrant colours, good text reproduction, not the best colour accuracy or backlight. No HDCP 2.2 support (required for 4k playback from external sources). Used as a productivity and programming display (at work)
- LG 43UD79-B: 43-inch IPS Panel, better colour accuracy and backlight, good text reproduction. Does have HDCP 2.2 support. Used as a productivity and programming display (at home).
- LD C755P: 55-inch OLED TV, ridiculously vibrant colours and contrast ratio, HDR, but text don't look so good, even after calibration. Used as a living room media display (duh). I know about how Windows text looks on it because my HTPC/Gaming PC is the primary display source, along with my XBox One S (for 4K BluRay).
My point is that the best 4K TV panel you can buy in 2017 isn't that hot out of the box at text display (and since that's not my primary use case for the display, I haven't spent _that_ much time mucking with settings in an attempt to fix that). If you decide to go the TV route, as opposed to a monitor, do your legwork to ensure that you'll be able to calibrate said TV for acceptable text reproduction. I did a little extra googling while typing this post, and I trust that you'd be able to accomplish this for most decent 4k panels - but I'll leave the "verify" part of "trust, but verify" up to you

Yes you are correct that I only have one display. However I'm not sure if I can fit an extra display with the desk I have now.

But you think you can fit a 40"? Does not compute.
I know you're on a tight budget; do what I suggested in one of your other threads: Find a secondhand cheap/free 17" or 19", and use it as a secondary display. I'm not nearly as cash constrained as you are, and that's what I did.

I thought you are using a 4K display? I can save up for a new display if I put my mind to it.
whm1974 wrote:Well it is going to be a while before I do anything anyway. I have do to more research. I just thinking that would I never even have a use case for anything higher then 2560x1600 to begin with.

I love virtual desktops and full screen apps on my 13" MBP (no external display) - it is probably my fav productivity setup

My eyes are getting too old for a 13" high DPI display.

It should feel like four full HD 21inch screens when split 4 ways.
Maybe you should consider it OP?
