Big Screen 1080p

Wed Nov 15, 2017 10:31 am

I'm not ready to upgrade everything for the 4k HDR revolution, but due to a surge I need a new TV in the living room. I figure I can save a lot just by sticking with 1080p. Does anyone have any recommendations for a ~60-inch 1080p TV to pick up this holiday shopping season? Smart or dumb, doesn't matter. However, if it is a smart TV, I would prefer it have a clean, intuitive interface and fast wifi to at least be something I might use. Also, I already have a sound bar. One issue I had with this last TV was the audio lag. I could set the delay through the TV that made it passable, but it wasn't perfect, so that would be a consideration for the next one.

A 60 inch 1080p TV that's new out of the box might be a difficult thing to find these days. There's plenty of 40-ish inch 1080p TVs around, but with 4k TVs starting at around $400 there's just not much incentive to make 1080p TVs of that size anymore.
Do not meddle in the affairs of archers, for they are subtle and you won't hear them coming.

If you don't need/want 4K and the other bells and whistles, watch for the Black Friday sales at Best Buy, Walmart, Newegg, etc. They usually get batches of lower-end models produced solely to draw in the door-buster types.

Yeah, as I'm looking at them online I'm starting to realize the same thing. Funny, as only a couple years ago they were limited to screens that cost over a thousand dollars. Not a bad thing. Any recommendations for 55"-65" TVs under $800?

Based in part on this glowing review from the Wirecutter:

https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-tv/

we purchased a TCL 55P605 for a presentation screen for work, and the screen looks very nice. I can not speak to how movies or TV look on it, but I would say it's worth your time giving it a look.

At least you don't need a lift to clean and repair those TVs.

And yeah, it is a little bit higher resolution than 1080p.

I think you got me sold on this one. Definitely fits the bill, and apparently I can get it $50 cheaper at best buy with a less fancy remote.

I'm glad that was helpful. (And I wish I could justify to myself why I need to go pick one up.)

I'm looking at this same panel. I found some YouTube videos showing that it's apparently got very low input latency, too. Might be a good panel for gaming, and that's drawn my interest.

A couple reviews indicated it's not great at steep angles (like more than 30 degrees or so off perpendicular) but that's not a big deal for me. It's mostly going to be for sitting on the couch around 10' away watching Netflix or playing games.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

The VA panel white shifting is a lot more annoying upclose than at normal TV viewing distances.

That's what I'm hoping for. At normal distances a 30-degree shift puts you quite a distance away.

I got a TCL 55P607, which is a 4K panel with at least some HDR capability. Is it an LG OLED TV? Definitely not. It's apparently got some sort of *VA panel But it got some really solid reviews, particularly this one, and so far (about 24 hours of ownership) I couldn't be happier. It's the same as the 605 with the fancier remote, I think.

My PS4 Pro games look great, tv looks great, and movies look great. I can even play old school emulated games proficiently. I don't fall off of cliffs in Super Mario World or Sonic 3.

ARC is supported and works fine with my receiver. That effectively buys me two extra HDMI ports.

A minor complaint is that it's not the brightest display on Earth but even when it's sunny in my living room window the "medium" brightness is plenty.

Roku features were easy to set up and thanks to auto switching I don't even need to use my Harmony 650 if I don't want to. I can just run everything through the phone app. The other inputs show up as channels, so switching is intuitive.

Just first impressions really but I dig it.
