Displayport cable

Thu Dec 07, 2017 10:31 pm

I have a GTX1070 with Displayport 1.4 as well as HDMI.

Just bought a new Asus ROG Swift PG279G monitor. 2560x1440 with G-Sync. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... -_-Product

I'm thinking that it won't do 2560x1440 through HDMI, so I should be using a Displayport cable. I need a 10ft cable because of the way my desk and computer are set up. Are there different cables depending on whether or not it's DP1.2 or 1.3 or 1.4? Or is a cable a cable?

Looking for suggestions on the proper cable so I can get the most out of this monitor. Also any general comments on this monitor.

Thanks

I would just use the latest cable standard the video card and monitor supports. Which is most likely to be 1.4, but check the manuals.

Another reason for not using HDMI is that G-Sync only works with DisplayPort. It would be a massive waste to get a nice monitor like the PG279G (I have the same one) and then not using G-Sync.

I think that any DP cable should work as most are 1.2 or higher. I just got some random cheap one and it works perfectly.

Yeah I bought the Amazon Basics DP 1.2 cable about a week ago :P. It's still not here, supposed to arrive later today.

I'm not sure why, but I didn't know that G-Sync wouldn't work on HDMI. That's good info, thanks.

The crime is that only a 1.8m cable was included in the box.

Seriously, I have my PC under my desk and the only way to run Freesync with the included cable was to have the cable making an ugly straight line to the graphics card. I bought a 3M cable so that I could use the cable management clips in my monitor arm and tuck the cable out of the way of my feet.

Actually, mine came with a DP cable in the box, it's just not long enough for my needs. I'm only using HDMI because I was already using it with my previous monitor.

LOL, yeah - I just edited the above after checking that Asus actually do, albeit an embarassingly short one. I bought an Acer and LG monitor (G-Sync and Freesync respectively) that didn't include the relevant cables before.

Monster Cable makes some that were bathed in the blood of goats or something. I forget the exact ritual, but I do recall that they are directional - don't get the source and destination sides confused!

EDIT: I'm sorry, the A/V crowd never latched onto DisplayPort, I wasn't able to find cables that cost more than $35. I must have been thinking of HDMI, oops.

The "bi-directional ethernet" is what makes it. All those other cables which only one way are just so pedestrian.

That is exactly how I felt when HDMI first came out. I recall CompUSA selling 5FT cables for well over $150! God forbid you wanted a 10+ FT cable.

OK, so I just hooked up the AmazonBasics DP cable and........... Tears....... Absolute tears of joy. I see why the reviewer from WFCCTech stated he would have to think hard on 144hz vs SSD. It really does liven up your Windows mouse and ever other motion... it's insane. Everything feels much more instant. Sort of similar to the SSD thing, but also similar to coming from a rubber dome keyboard to a proper mechanical. You don't notice the difference until you try.

Going to hop into a game and try... and this is without Freesync unfortunately.

Those are called active cables and the ritual involves an embedded chip for line calibration. This is actually a good thing as active cables actually have the means of transporting higher bit rates over longer distances compared to reversible/passive cables. The voodoo involved in this does have some valid uses outside of ordinary marketing witchcraft.

The gotcha is that HDMI never formally has approved active cables prior to version 2.0. (I think the new HDMI 2.1 with its 48 Gbit mode does formally support them now.) The main reason is that the embedded line calibrator IC only has something like 250 mW of power to use.

DP on the other hand was designed to support active cabling and adapters from the start. The spec permits up to 5 W for any embedded chips to handle media conversion or line calibration. The DP alt-mode for USB-C further enhances this by leveraging Type-C's inherent USB power and data transmission to handle the hand shaking.

The AV crowd has taken up DP in some areas but the reality is that HDMI is so wide spread that gear that has DP also have HDMI. In general, pro gear that used to have dual link-DVI is being replaced by updated hardware with DP and a few HDMI ports. The reason why DP didn't catch on in the consumer space was that the initial version didn't support HDCP as that was part of the v1.1 revision and audio support wasn't as evolved as HDMI.

Wait, is that actually cabled silver conductor in those? If so, I'd kinda get the price premium but I still can't fathom the greater question of why. Digital audio is sent encoded in with the video stream for output. There is the audio return channel which does have a dedicate pin but still doesn't make sense as the bandwidth is rather low. Any sort of real production would be using independent cable runs for the audio that'd go to a DSP processor for mixing etc.

Exactly. The electrical conductivity of silver is better than copper, but only marginally so. It ain't gonna make a damn bit of difference to a digital signal over a reasonable length cable run. The rest of the description is techno-babble.

Reminds me of the experiment someone did (sorry I don't have a link handy) where they did a blind listening test with a bunch of audiophiles, comparing some stupidly expensive speaker cables versus wiring the speakers using heavy-duty extension cords from the local hardware store. (Hint: There was no discernible difference.)
