Like a lot of people I was looking forward to the 4K 144Hz HDR monitors for the two years or however long between them being announced as "soon" and then actually coming out. The past two or so months I've been seeing lots of the 2K IPS monitors on sale... Are new ones on the way at COMPUTEX in a month? Or are Spring sales a normal monitors thing I've just never paid attention to before? It something else?

I believe a good chunk of the sales are clearancing out last year's model as the units announced at CES are finally shipping. Case in point, I picked up four LG 27" 4K IPS displays for $250 USD a piece and they're good units thus far. With pricing like that, the older 1920 x 1080 and 2560 x 1440 units are feeling downward pricing pressure. What is driving the new models to market are newer DP 1.3/1.4 controllers, HDR, 10 bit panels and higher resolution (see the 5120 x 1440 unit in the news). So basically if you don't need/want the bleeding edge, it is actually a fairly good time to get a display

Next year we'll again see a similar revamp of display product lines as HDMI 2.1 starts to make an appearance, even more higher resolution units and hopefully the HDR specs iron themselves out into some conformity.

I wouldn't expect them to be maxed out with my current or next setup, they were just the unreleased ones I wanted because they checked all the boxes.

I'm thinking 1440p IPS with high refresh rate (preferably with HDR and G-Sync... The former isn't a must) and a secondary 4K one that's 32" unless Windows font scaling stops being hot garbage in the near future. Hopefully HDR on that one as it'll be used for media.

I was using my 3840x1600 FreeSync display for gaming (iRacing) but once I started using my Oculus Rift I've never gamed on that display again.

I'm in the 1440p 120Hz+ advocate camp. I don't really care about 4K to be honest, at least not on my PC with how much GPU grunt it takes to power games. My perfect monitor, at least at this point in time, would be as follows:

1440p (2560 pixels of the vertical variety)
120Hz (144 is fine, but 120 IMO is the sweet spot so if it requires more work or more $$$ to get 144 then idgaf give me 120)
100% DCI-P3 (rather have Rec2020 but let's be honest that's not happening for a couple years at least)
HDR (Dolby Vision + HDR10/+ + whatever other stupid standard some company or consortium has come up with)
1000cd/m peak brightness
Gsync (rocking a 1080 so that's where I am, but I'd also be totally fine with HDMI 2.1(and thus, HDMI VRR) so long as Nvidia supports it on the 11 series as I'm likely to stick with the green team if I do get a new card)
ULMB
24-27" (for me this is the perfect size when combined with a 1440p resolution)
I don't care what panel tech it uses really, but don't give me slow pixels or weakass blacks. That's not all that much to ask.
FALD (should help with that pesky low-light glow notorious of IPS type panels)

I care not at all about 4K, ultrawide displays/resolutions, or stupid curves. Give me the above and I'll give you a few bucks. Seriously though, do not pay TWO THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS for these new monitors guys and gals. That's just insane.

AUO will be also manufacturing a non HDR (no FALD, likely a conventional edge lit back light) version of that 4k high refresh panel. Samsung will be manufacturing a 27 inch 4k non HDR VA panel 120hz as well. So if you are after 4k high refresh only you might want to wait as monitors like that will be cheaper.

HDR to me isn't ready for mass adoption yet. You're really in the early adopter phase which means you're going to be paying a large premium for a sub optimal experience just to get in. We'll actually need a technology shift such as OLED panels suitable for PC use or micro LED FALD back lights or something else to really take the next step.

LG will be manufacturing a 1440p 27inch IPS high refresh panel as well. This combined with the new high end being 4k high refresh may drive down the price of 1440p high refresh panels.

I would be surprised if any GPU supports HDMI 2.1 this year. The spec was formally ratified only in January. First transceivers and scalars are shipping at the end of the year. It'll be 2019 when the first wave of HDMI 2.1 products hit retail.

I do agree that with HDMI 2.1 incorporating VRR, nVidia will eventually support it but I'd wager that'd be in the 2020 time frame. They'll continue to stick with G-Sync exclusively for DP displays for awhile after that. The shift toward supporting VESA's adaptive refresh won't happen until Intel ships integrated graphics with support for it (which should be now if Intel's road map didn't collapse due to 10 nm delays).

There are faster 1440P displays on the way with HDR. Some are even IPS! We will also see if the new VA panels differ from the prior Samsung VA tech and finally shed those awful pixel transitions.
LG:

n the 27" space is the forthcoming LM270WQA panel, with a 2560 x 1440 resolution and 165Hz refresh rate. This also offers a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness, sRGB gamut. It's not expected to go in to production until December 2018.

In the 34" ultrawide space there is already a 3440 x 1440 resolution @ 100Hz IPS LM340UW4 panel available and used in some displays. There are plans to produce the LM340UW5 from May 2018 which will offer the same resolution but a boosted 144Hz refresh rate. This will be combined with NVIDIA G-sync and also VESA HDR 400 support. This will then offer a 1900R curvature, 400 cd/m2 brightness (550 cd/m2 peak), 1000:1 contrast ratio and 98% DCI-P3 coverage.

There is also talk from LG.Display about improvements in their IPS response times, reportedly trying to improve on the current 5ms G2G, pushing down down to 1ms G2G with higher levels of overdrive. It remains to be seen how successful this is in practice, and how much overshoot gets introduced but an investment in driving response times to accommodate higher refresh rates properly is certainly welcome.

That 350 nits/400 nits of brightness worry me, as that translates into what....120/140 nits with ULMB? Based on my experience, that's way too low.

There are some pretty good 2560x1440 VA 75Hz Freesync panels doing the rounds at the moment. The old HP Omen still looks amazing for the low price it commands, and the new HP Pavillion Gaming 32 adds HDR with a mutli-zone backlight. At a ridiculously low price is the same panel - 75Hz WQHD Freesync VA in the Q3277PQU.

75fps at 1440p at max or near max details is also a realistic expectation from a Vega/1080 GPU

At 1080p there's a 144Hz MSI Optix that is reviewing pretty well for the price.
