Looking for good 1080p gsync monitor

Wed Aug 29, 2018 4:12 pm

So, I have gotten into PUBG in a big way. So much so, I want a Gsync monitor. But higher resolution is mostly wasted. I am currently using a good Dell 1920x1200. But gsync is winning me over. 24" or less. But I want really good color on it and good gaming response time.

Get yer pocketbook ready, friend. Most 1080p Gsync monitors are TN to be honest. Must be trouble to produce a 120+ Hz 24"ish IPS type panel.

Honest to goodness I can't find a 1080p + Gsync + IPS type monitor. These are all TN.

Step up to 27"/1440p + Gsync + IPS type and you get some options though.

And a good 27" TN for good measure. (fwiw I have heard the colors on this screen are just fine)

I can vouch for the Dell monitor. I run the 27" myself and the colors are fine. If interested in the Dell watch for sales as I got my 27" for 350.00.

Don't be afraid of high quality TN for gaming. My secondary monitor is an older Dell 24in IPS 1920x1200, and my Primary is the 27in TN Gsync S2716DG 1440p. The TN looks better than the IPS.

Hopefully we didn't just make you also need a video card upgrade.

IPS are far better for TV's than TN, so you usually see the IPS in the big sizes. Nobody wants a 24" TV... so it is not financially favorable for the manufacturers to make that size IPS unit.

I used to think the TN were as good visually as the IPS, until I had to replace my TN and got a VA monitor. IPS must have upped their game, because there is a substantial picture quality improvement. That ROG IPS monitor is the top of the heap... but you will pay for it. Definitely a "get what you pay for" type of monitor.

Should be fine for 1080 and even 1440 in some games.

I'll give a slight twist on this... if the monitor is large (27in+) and you sit close to it, you will like the IPS better. If you sit far away, you won't notice as much difference between an IPS and TN monitor. Everyone will say the IPS has better colors.. they are right, but you have to be pretty picky to care about the difference.

Edit: Strangely though, my 1440p monitor looks better when 1080 content is displayed at 1440 than at 1080. Might be something going on with scaling vs native resolution.

Modern GPUs (NVIDIA at least) have built in scalers that I reckon are better than the ones in most displays. There's an option in the NVCP to only use GPU scaling, and the GPU will always output the native res of your monitor with any lower res content scaled to fit. The GPU scaler probably result in less input lag as well though I've never tested.

If you have mountable arms for monitors, most won't mount (without and adapter, if at all) over 27". I have the Asus ROG Swift 27" and I love it, and it's mounted on the echogear arms TR did a review on a few months back.
