any suggestions for a new or recent RAW pocketable under $250?

Sat Sep 29, 2018 1:38 am

do they even exist anymore?

anywho, i'm looking for a new or not-to-old pocketable for my mum under $250 that shoots RAW. i really like my S110, but it seems like current gen Canons and a couple other brands i looked at don't do that anymore. any ideas and suggestions?

A used mk1-mk2 RX100 is about the best you'll get for under $350, but do note that it pushes the limit of what can be considered pocketable. If you're really into Canon, the G7X might be worth looking into; it's Canon's response to the RX100 and has been out long enough that there should be some affordable used options. Old S110s are really easy to come by, so if you're happy with that then maybe it makes the most sense.

All in all, there isn't a whole lot of activity in the point-and-shoot space.

Unless you are into the super-zooms. Those have gotten excited over the last couple years. Not in the $250 budget though.

i looked on imaging-resource.com, and found nothing matches your requirements.
for recent pocketable RAW, there's Olympus TG-5 and Panasonic ZS70. both released last year, both around $400

edit: ZS70 is also known as TZ90 in some markets. it has 30x zoom (24-720mm eq). TG-5 is waterproof

Look nowhere except the RX 100 series. I'd suggest an MK2. It should be right around 300-400 depending on used/new whatever, but it's a great camera. I actually disagree with the sentiment that it's on the verge of being too big to be pocketable (though Novus would definitely know because that's who I sold mine to :)). It's a very small camera for what it can do. I've shoved my MK2 (now sold unfortunately) in my shirt and jeans pockets more times than I can count.

Emry's suggestion for KEH is a good place to start. Also check Amazon used.

oops, forgot where i posted this D: anything closer in quality and price to an S110 (with RAW)? forgot to mention in the OP it's for my mum, who may end up not doing any RAW manipulation, but it would at least be nice to be there. and doesn't have to be as high end as the RX100

Not recently unfortunately, the P&S market, especially the budget market, has been decimated by smartphones.

I agree. I have the mk1-mk2 RX100 and it's great, but I would still want a G7X though
