Another moment of tech weakness

Tue Mar 12, 2019 2:33 pm

My older micro-4/3 camera, the Panasonic GH-2 was getting long in the tooth, so I felt the need to upgrade to the Panasonic G9, being that I am more of a stills guy.
All I wanted is more DR and better low light capabilities. What I got was *wow!*.

Some of the cool things this camera can do like 60FPS action captures, 30FPS at 6K. No mirror slapping about, but annoying sound. It does standard high-speed also at full resolution.

I decided to stay with micro 4/3 since I have lenses already, and I like the UI. Plus it is still small enough to take it for casual outings.

What is your photo sharing service of choice these days?

Anyone get any new camera equipment lately?

I bought a new monopod, tripod, and intervalometer a couple weeks ago. Getting back into some rocket photography.

I like Google Photos for sharing/storage.

No new gear recently unfortunately. Saving up for a next-gen mirrorless.

This G9 has it all built right in. Crazy 6.5 stops of stabilization, and a time-lapse mode that is frigging cool. Can't wait to try it on a stormy day or flowers opening in the sun. Since I can run the cam from USB, bypassing the battery, I can run it for however long I need to. I have an enormous USB battery pack for travel, it would run the G9 for two straight days.

The stabilization is so good, that when I took some indoor video it looked like I had the camera on a tripod other than there was slow motion that would make you a little seasick.

What kind of rocket photography? The big guns or hobby rockets?

I posted some pics on my Twitter from DM1:

Overexposed and not wide enough, but hey, gotta start somewhere.

That's me, too, though I'm not so much saving up cash to make a purchase in the near future as waiting until my existing EOS 5D Mk. III is obsolete enough that I feel the need to upgrade to a new camera. When Canon introduced the EOS R line of full-frame mirrorless gear, that put a stop to my repeated eyeing of the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM as a replacement for my old EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. I don't want to drop $1600 on a new lens for the old mount if I might rather wait to get a future model that will be optimized for native operation on the new mount (even though EF lenses for EOS DSLRs are very easily adapted to EOS-R mirrorless cameras).

My newest piece of camera gear is an Extender EF 1.4X III to convert my EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM to an equivalent of 140-560mm f/5.6-8.0. The camera still has autofocus in that configuration, though it's not as quick as it is with larger aperture lenses.

I use Photobucket, but I'll stop short of saying that I like it. :-?

Some samples from today:

One thing I don't like about Google is the difficulty of embedding the images in a forum like this. Thought I figured it out once, but doesn't seem to work any more.

I clicked on the thumbnail to get the full-screen display in the Google viewer, then I right-clicked "View Image" in Firefox to get the actual image instead of the viewer. Just copy and paste that humungous URL between [ img ] [ / img ] tags, and Bob's your uncle.

No good here. This is what I see (and it's the same without PB blocking cookies from that domain).

Hmmm. It still looks okay to me in Firefox, Edge or Chrome.

Yeah, that is what I mean. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It makes me think that the URL is actually pointing to a temporary "cached" image that is only available if someone has accessed a page to force it to be generated. Wait a while and it goes away.

What really ticks me off is sharing images through FB. FB sometimes decides they know best how to process my images. Color shifts, compression goes way up, changes in sharpness... Sometimes it leaves things alone with the same settings. I don't know what triggers the alterations. It is set up for sharing snapshots and phone images, not really someone trying to get the most out of photography. Of course this is where most of my old friends and family see my posts.

Google used to give me the option of performing some fixes, but from what I can tell lately they don't muck with them. It is the sharing/embedding difficulties that are frustrating.

Of note: I looked into the various cameras in the price range of the G9 in the sensor abilities, and it turns out that a full-frame Sony compact only would give me 0.4bits more dynamic range. That is also true with some older full frame DSLRs/Mirrorless in the same price range. The newer full frames that are $2.5K and up kill it, more than 2 bits and other impressive metrics.
