Anyone recommend a 1440p monitor with minimum backlight bleed?

Thu May 16, 2019 4:12 am

Greetings everyone,
I recently got an Asus 32" 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor, and while it certainly looked great in the shop, when I got it home and tried it out, the backlight bleed was awful--especially in the two lower corners. Instrument panels were badly washed out, even flying in daylight. So, I returned it.
I'm partial to anything 2K (2560 x 1440) and about 29 to 32 inches. I don't want a 4K because text looks bad when scaled, I like to run in native res and I really like 2560 x 1440! It's a great resolution for my GTX 1070 to run.
I'm not fussy about whether it's IPS, VA, TN etc... but, I can't STAND backlight bleed. Even a little ghosting/streaking doesn't bother me much--flight sims tend to have smooth action anyway, and aren't twitchy/jerky like FPS games. So, it doesn't need to be a 1ms or 2ms panel.
I just can't stand the awful bleed, especially flying at night!
Any recommendations, anyone?
Thanks

IPS is typically very susceptible to backlight bleed, whilst VA is not. The effect is emphasised on IPS because many of them exhibit corner-glow that can seem like blacklight bleed, and on top of that, their black levels are quite high, so you really notice the lack of darkness when playing in a dark/dim room in the evenings.

Are you after any particular features? (High refresh, freesync, HDR?)

Unless you're after 144Hz gaming-specific, my advice would be to look for a 75Hz 32" 1440p model with Freesync. If you have an AMD card or 1xxx/20xx series Nvidia card you can use VRR with it, and the 75Hz panels are more likely to be AUO panels if it's not specifically stated. Samsung panels aren't bad, but they're a generation behind AUO when it comes to dark-transition response times and smearing. Also, since both AUO and Samsung make 144Hz panels now, the 75Hz are likely to be older AUO models so you should be able to find them with deep discounts. One I know to be decent from past experience is the HP Omen 32, but I wouldn't expect that to be available - I'm only mentioning it in case you find the last one on clearance somewhere for an absolute steal.

Also, stay away from curved panels. I like the curve, but it's much harder to get uniform, bleed-free backlighting from a curved panel unless it's OLED.

Chrispy is on point on this.

I think a lot of people are just hearing the horror stories. If you are paying premium price the monitor will have near zero backlight bleed. I say near zero because I haven't seen a 1440p without it. Now if you are going to go on the cheap and try a no name, knock off, or korean panel......well that's a crapshoot and MMV.

I have a ASUS ROG PG279Q that I am very quite happy with. Paid premium price (black Friday price but still), it still has a little backlight bleed in the top right corner. I only notice it in absolute black scenes in games and when watching a full screen video. But even with the sliver of bleed it doesn't take me out of the moment.

What Crispy said.

However another option could be 3M privacy films or others. A coworker has some and it seems to have the benefit to mask IPS glow.

From what I have read, even premium IPS monitors are subject to the IPS lottery. Some will have next to no backlight bleed, others will have terrible BLB or even inconsistent colour temperature across different areas of the panel.

I'm about to play this lottery for the first time with the LG 27850. The monitor that RTINGS got seems to have pretty bad backlight bleed, but TFT Central's review (still behind paywall for patreon members until monday August 19) had next to none. Overall, if you disregard the lack of g-sync module, black frame insertion, or ULMB features, the LG 27850 seems to edge out the PG279Q, Acer predator equivalent, and the recent Aorus 27" IPS monitor in terms of panel quality, motion blur, and response times.

I will try it out and send it back to Amazon if the Backlight bleed or colour shift is beyond acceptable levels. If that happens, I'll probably look for something like the ASUS PG278Q as a "good" TN monitor, since I'm still on the same TN BENQ XL2420T 1080p 120hz monitor that has served as my primary monitor for over 7 years.

Blacklight bleed will always be a problem with any LCD panel due to the nature on how they work. It is a matter of how much you are willing to tolerate.

Rtings has a "consolidation" type article specific to 1440p displays that might assist you: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/ ... uad-hd-qhd
