Looking for help/advice on choosing a monitor

Mon Oct 07, 2019 2:13 pm

I recently upgraded to a decently powerful desktop rig (9700k, 2080 Ti). Right now I'm using a run of the mill 1440p 60hz display, but I'm planning on upgrading that in the near future as well. My original plan was to go for a really nice 4K 120hz display, but it turns out that's not gonna be in my budget for a while, so instead I'm looking at 1440p high refresh displays. I think I've narrowed things down to two choices:

Asus VG27AQ

OR

LG 27GL850

It seems the primary differences between the two are that the Asus monitor has backlight strobing, while the LG has a 10 bit panel. I'm not sure how much of a difference either feature will make over the other for not having it. Right now I do almost all my gaming and media consumption (Netflix, YouTube Movies, etc) on my desktop, so I'd like something that can do both really well. I don't play any super competitive/reaction based games (and if I did I'm not good enough that a better monitor would improve me lol). Right now my biggest games are D
Borderlands 3, Rocket League, Diablo 3, and I'm planning on playing through Deus Ex Mankind Divided, and the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare, in the near future.

Which of these two monitors would give a better experience and why? Or are there better choices that you'd recommend?

LG is outright lying on their product page saying that Nano IPS covers 98% of DCI-P3 colorspace, implying that this monitor covers that much.

The Asus model is built to last due to the TUF branding.

And yet, that review says the color gamut of the monitor is "outstanding". So at the end of the day, does it matter?
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Only SDR color gamut is outstanding. HDR one is just "decent" which is contrary to what they say on the monitor's product page. Just see them brazenly lying through their teeth here http://imgur.com/aB3yZ4i

How can anyone trust them with such blatant disregard for factual accuracy?

EDIT: I own the LG C8 and it's doing a fine job so far but for the 27GL850-B, LG is engaged in false advertising, likely due to the tough competition and maybe coz *most* gamers are dumb and care about flashy things without giving much thought to the actual specs?
