Finally ready to buy a 43" HDR1000 monitor...(Have to settle for a 32"/HDR1400)

Sun Nov 17, 2019 12:14 pm

Read this PR release on the PC hardware sites and it was there(Amazon) Sat. morning but in the afternoon it was gone.

"Acer Predator CG437K gaming monitor is now available in the US"

Seemingly gone everywhere. I checked ACER online sales ... no listing.

(TV makers seem to think "small equals cheap". There are no top quality 43" tvs only monitors)

It's 4K and has the HDR1000 rating which so,so many monitors cheap out on.
I've just decided to pull the trigger and get something... Stop holding breath for HDMI 2.1 and MicroLed displays.

Guess they shipped the one display into the US just for the PR release.

LG C9 is also an option. HDMI 2.1 support and officially G-Sync optimized with nVidia's blessing. You just need to ensure to take frequent breaks during gameplay, like bringing up the in-game menu to ensure the screen changes often enough that onscreen static elements don't cause any trouble for the OLED's health and longevity. I know, it's a pain but the gorgeous OLED visuals make it worth it.

Yeah, OLED is good.

I've been using my C7 now for two years for my HTPC without burn-in. You just need to be aware of it's limitations.

OLED needs to be exercised by differing signals, or those pixels need to be off (black). I use mine for internet browsing, watching TV, watching movies, playing fullscreen games. I figure I do more than enough fullscreen movie playback to make-up for fixed HUD items in video games, and the fixed desktop taskbar.

And because every moment your OLED screen stays bright white, it's losing lifetime, I also:

Avoid running the in sunlight, so you don't have to crank up the brightness.
change the color theme to Dark Expert, so it will look best in a dark room.

My windows tweaks:
run windows dark theme, and Firefox Dark Mode web extension.
run black desktop background,
run idle black screen saver at 2 minutes. This turns the pixels almost completely off
try to avoid spending too many hours on bright white websites.

Thanks for the thoughts but 43 inches is the max that will fit the space.
Wish I had room for a 65 inch one. They don't seem to make small Oleds.

They come in 55 inches today, and will be available in 48" next year.

The yields are getting better on denser screens, as well as larger panels, which is why LG is going bigger and smaller next year.

Wow. I'm in luck. I've been putting off gaming on my OLED until I know more about how to NOT game improperly on it. How long do you play games with HUD items? Maximum time you have played such a game without serious consequences? I love LG's webOS screensaver. It's simple but just beautiful to behold since only an OLED can truly show it like that. Little dots and streaks of saturated colors on a vast pitch black expanse of screen real estate.

CG437K displays only 16.7 million colors so nowhere near true HDR. You should plan on getting the Philips Momentum. It has two HDR settings: one for HDR500 and the other for HDR1000 so you can pick and choose based on the content (darker content will need HDR500 for less blooming).

https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/philips-436m6vbpab/

Based on this review alone, I would grab it but I've been spoiled by 55 inches. In fact, I was wishing I could go into debt to afford a high end 75 incher. That big a screen is just mesmerizing. Envelops you into whatever you are watching. Time just stops!

Wow, this is much harder then I thought it would be...
Was looking at the Philips monitor and read something about it being one of those odd non-RGB pixle arrangements (BGR) panels.
So problems with clear font display.

And notice so many of the 4k panels do ONLY 60 hz...no,no,no. I've been stuck with that for years. No more 60 hz.
Had not noticed the Acer panel had limited color numbers...Thought the HDR 1000 rating had requirements with it.
Can't seem to get where I want even for a couple thousand bucks!

60 Hz only is a hard no.

Relax on the colors or the HDR level...
That would let the HDR 600 Asus panel in..,......(Just read of a "soon" to be released Asus XG43UQ)
Said to be BGR also. Would I see the BGR font problem with my eyes...wish I knew.
Just don't know. Have never laid eyes on any of it yet.

People that have actually seen this stuff. Thoughts Welcome Please!
Thanks.

@JustAnEngineer
Freesync... A hard "yes".
Thankfully that is much better supported now. Seeing it a lot. Thanks!

For gaming, you probably want FreeSync, too (or FreeSync2).
· R7-5800X, Liquid Freezer II 280, RoG Strix X570-E, 64GiB PC4-28800, Suprim Liquid RTX4090, 2TB SX8200Pro +4TB S860 +NAS, Define 7 Compact, Super Flower SF-1000F14TP, S3220DGF +32UD99, FC900R OE, DeathAdder2

That's the only thing that ticks most of the boxes for you. If you try to find something bigger, you will have to compromise on HDR quality. 4K monitors advertising HDR rarely implement it as well as 4K TVs.

Ah, thanks (I think) :) ...For that link.
I got into the ProArt area and found the ASUS ProArt Display PA32UCG - 32-inch, 4K, HDR1400, 120Hz etc.

https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/ProArt ... /overview/

Gotta settle for a smaller monitor but this area seems to be the ONLY one with most of the "goodies".
(or all possibly... I don't understand some of the "goodies" listed)

So I'm searching away trying to find one to buy...after I give up I notice the "coming soon" over on the side!
That probably means next year maybe or someday.

Was telling myself "buy it. It will only hurt for a little while". But no,no they have to stretch it out so I can't just get it over with.

Oh, the older model of this(the one you can buy) did not list a refresh rate. Only listed this...
"Digital Signal Frequency : DisplayPort, Thunderbolt™ 3:142 KHz (H) / 40 ~60 Hz(V) HDMI : 109 ~142 KHz (H) /29 ~65 Hz(V)"

Now if I understand that correctly...the "V" listing would mean 60-65Hz max....that is a Hard No. So gotta wait for the new 120Hz model "soon".
Now I'm going to try to "not" think about it.

thanks.

That's an excellent choice and definitely is going to be worth the wait. I just hope it isn't more than $2000. I think this monitor is meant for game developers so they can create assets/models/maps and run the game with everything in its full glory with an emphasis on color accuracy. If it's $2000, heck, even i'm gonna get it.

I just hope this stuff comes out this year (or at all). You see wonderful things displayed but they never come to market.
I've seen the interviews that state only "this half" or "2020" as to when...can only hope.
At least these specs should require "HDMI 2.1" FINALLY. MiniLed is nice. "MicroLed" is probably years away.
Good to see OLEDs finally dropping in size to High 40s (inches)! Sadly I need Low 40s.
And Please,Please,Please no noisy fan!

Thanks!

Well, new report saying Dec. 2020 release...NOT holding breath but am crossing fingers!

It was supposed to be released Q1 2019. I found it last Nov 2019.

https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/ProArt ... y-PA32UCG/ ...Still "coming soon" a year later-(announced Sept 2019).

At least the Nvidia cards now have HDMI 2.1 .
Can't imagine AMD not having HDMI 2.1 on next gen but it's lack would be the only thing to force me to buy a Nvidia card.
