Naw, these are from May. I have Comprehensive Exams tomorrow for my MA and needed a break. Since I couldn't go out and shoot, I looked at some old shots.

Good luck!

So, comps are done. Did a wee walkabout today on campus with my a7 and Minolta 100/2. I am falling in love with this lens. Tiny, well balanced on the a7, and so nicely sharp. Love the thin DOF at 100mm. And I absolutely love the bokeh. These are un-processed, aside from cropping. Oh, one does have some CA removal. It had some CA in the eye reflection.

We had a rain show move through late in the afternoon followed by a temperature drop around dusk. Coming home from picking the dogs up from the groomer, I noticed a light fog moving in. Much to my wife's consternation, I grabbed the camera and tripod and headed out the front door.

Very fun. I miss mist here in Colorado. Its very, very rare, as high and dry as it is. I like #2 best, and its a pity about the raindrop on the lens.

Can you get starbursts on groups of lights? I don't know and would like to know. If you could, that might be an interesting long exposure with some nice starbursts there.

It's not a raindrop. It's reflections off the lens elements. The high power flood lights are just too much for the coatings on the lense elements. It's even more pronounced in a couple of other images, to the point where you can actually make out the individual lights in the reflections.

You didn't have a filter on, did you? I've given up on them outside of using polarizers for some landscapes and water reflections. My 70-300, especially, will show almost exact 1:1 reflections of bright stuff when used with above average clear protection filters.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I did... :-? I keep a UV filter on the front of it. Didn't even think about it until you mentioned it.

I gave up uv filters. I find a hood works as well for protection. Even then, a front element can take a ton of damage before it affects image quality.

I was actually discussing this with one of the guys in the office today. He just picked up a new Canon with the 18-135 kit lens and was asking about a protective filter. The way that lens is built, you the barrel sticks out beyond the front element a bit so you would have to hit it on a pointy object in the middle of lens to actual get to the element.

I'll probably leave the filter on mine for now. That's my general purpose walk around lens and it doesn't normally get put in the situation in that image. If I find myself taking more pictures that cause problems, I'll re-think that.

A hood does a pretty good job, too. I never go without a hood on, mostly for protective reasons.

Regarding actual damage to lens front elements, this article pretty much made me never worry.

Can't imagine a lens not having a sacrificial UV filter on it.

The thing is, digital sensors don't need a UV filter. I actually have one or two that are just clear glass - no UV coating. I usually remove the UV or clear filter when I install a polarizer, but it's not as disposable.

I use filters for storage, as it keeps dust off of the front element. I try to remember to take them off before I go out shooting, especially if I'm shooting at night. That was an issue on my Canon (cheap Tiffen filter), and while the Hoya's I have a bit better, I do prefer no filter, though I'll probably look into a nice CPL and some ND filters. Eventually. I use hoods whenever possible, as my 135/2.8 has a built-in and the 28-70 has one that works well. The 40/1.8 doesn't have a hood, but it has a tiny front element so I'm not too afraid. Of course, I'm gonna have to find one for the new 58mm. That'll be fun...

Random thread contribution for today:
Image_DSC9341

Just got a Minolta 58mm f/1.2 (mentioned above) this afternoon so I took it out and shot a bit after work. The above shot is at f/2, ISO 100, 1/8000 sec.
It's a great lens. Extremely fast, solid, but not too bulky, very sharp above f/2, with lovely bokeh and contrast. The coating is also excellent, as it barely flares, especially when compared to my Konica AR, and I really like the Minolta colors.

First snow of the year in Cincy, snapped some shots on the way into work. For whatever reason, I've been addicted to shooting in the 75mm - 135mm range recently. These are at 75mm.

I've been spending more time with my EOS-M and the excellent 22/2 and 11-22:

Image22/2 at f/2.8 for some extra DOF by John C. Tharp, on Flickr

But I did break out my Kenko macro tube set and took some shots with my 50/1.4 stopped way down using all of the tubes and my YN568EX II set to TTL and 14mm for lighting:

ImageAt f/8 with significant CA corrections by John C. Tharp, on Flickr

ImageFull Kenko Stack with 50/1.4 USM at f/16 by John C. Tharp, on Flickr

I've mostly stopped playing around with macro stuff after having given up my 100L, but if I can get my LED TTL ring light (a cheap Bower setup) adapted for 58mm threads, I think I'll take another shot at it; the 40/2.8 will probably provide much better bokeh with similar magnification to the 50/1.4 and my 70-300 may be able to provide slightly more magnification. And I was surprised to see that the 85/1.8, while providing much better background rendering, has a lower magnification than the 50/1.4!

ImageFaded Glory by mattsteg, on Flickr

From last March.

Hotel in the middle of Tahiti, Relais de la Maroto. Accessible only by 4x4 or helicopter. This building/wing seems pretty much abandoned, except for a somewhat sketchy restroom and the satellite dish on the wall. The hotel is still a going concern, and the restaurant in particular was decent (we stopped there for lunch). I did not ask if it was current, but at the cash register (manned in true Tahitian tradition by a Rae Rae) was a list including several first growths. It seems almost quixotic to run a hotel and fine dining restaurant in such a location, and visiting (just for lunch) was an incredible surreal experience. The logistics and effort to keep such a business going boggle the mind.

And now with a bit more time - liking SS's first mist shot quite a bit, and flip's second snow shot. The touch od color from what I assume to be oak leaves really adds to the impression imo.

Snow here in dreary Minneapolis is more like rain for now...

I bounce back and forth between both of flip's snow shots. They both seem to capture the dreary beauty of a winter storm. The first one definitely reminds me of childhood winters and could have been taken in numerous places around my parents house.

Love the shot of the hotel there Matt, the image itself is surreal, can't imagine being there in person.

I think I may pop out my camera for a trip we are going to be making to the Zoo for my sons 2nd birthday... hmmm. It's probably time I give the whole camera thing another shot. Felt pretty beaten down the first time seeing my Sony A230 in comparison to the Nikon and Cannon shots right out of camera.

I hate that this thread as been abandoned for the last couple of months. I also hate posting multiple shots from the same place, but slightly less (and am too lazy to edit down further). Feedback is very much welcome. First black and whites in years - felt like B&W fit the setting.
