Out with the drone again a few times this week. I forgot that i have to pick the light metering location myself most of the time so some of my pictures came out majorly under exposed. I did get at least one that i like looking at though.

Are the two of Sol Duc Falls HDR images? I ask as the background highights look strange. It may be that they are just a tad overexposed, but looking at full resolution, there appears to be a weird vignetting around the leaves and branches. I really like the picture content, but my attention was immediately drawn to those highlights, and not in a good way. The lower falls picture is just impressive, but then I like the wilderness.

The one on the left is an HDR composite. Here's the normal exposure from that set:

The water is just trickling this year compared to two years ago because of a severe drought affecting the pacific northwest.
This is the view from the bridge looking up the canyon at the falls. The photo on the right in my previous post is a normal exposure. It is the view from partway up the right side of the canyon looking back down at the falls and the bridge. The brightly lit and deeply shadowed forest seemed like an excellent application for HDR. It doesn't work worth a darn with moving subjects, but I thought that the rocks and trees would hold still for the multiple exposures. The blurred trees in the background are probably out of focus, since the image is at f/4 and is focused on the bright spot between the two streams of falling water.

The glaciers that feed the rivers in this area are shrinking quickly. This year's snow melt is already gone. Smoke from the Paradise wildfire obscured some of the valleys.

When I click on the magnifying glass on the Photobucket page, I get an image that is scaled to the width of my browser window. If I then right-click and select "view image", then click again, I can get Firefox to display them at full resolution. I uploaded most of the photos from this summer as "Medium" 9.8 MP 3840x2560 JPEGs, straight out of the camera. The high-resolution raw images have more than twice as many pixels at 5760x3840. Of course, these are puny compared to the brand-new 5Ds or some of the development work that's going on at Canon.

I am basically no good with my camera (Nikon D3200), but I was really happy with the way this one turned out. First snow of the year.

I decided to test out what was new in Lightroom (Absolutely nothing from CS5) on a bad photo of my dog. I thought the result was... interesting to say the least.

LRCC is mostly LR5, but with added HDR (as in, extending dynamic range) and stitching tools, as well as a dehaze tool that works absolute wonders.

I've not been shooting heavily for some time now, but over the holidays I did get a couple shots I liked. The first is a fungi colony growing on the edge of a fallen stump. The second is, quite distincly, Mt. Hood (Cascades range, Oregon) as viewed from air on a clear day.





Both were shot with the Olympus OMD EM-10 using the 12-50mm 1:3.5-6.3 kit zoom, which does a better job than most kit lenses but has obvious weaknesses in low light, and post-processed using Paint.net.

Went on a quick little hike on one of the trails up here in Kodiak and found this a ways off the path. Sony A6000 with a Canon Serenar 50mm f/1.9 Leica thread mount lens.

May just be my monitor, but it looks like the clouds are over exposed in the Goose Cove picture. Not to be picky or anything... Gorgeous pictures. My thought, looking at the Nova Scotia pictures, was "looks so pretty now, just wait till winter rolls in -- brrr...."

I left the 40/2.8, 85/1.8, flash, timer, monopod and tripod at home so that I had room in my backpack for everything else, including the ultrabook and its accessories.

Was going through some pics looking for ones to use as desktop wallpaper, and thought these were kind of cool:





Taken from a hotel balcony in Hawaii back in February. Was playing around with my phone's camera, to see how well it did with longer exposures. The phone was hand-held, resting against the balcony railing for added stability.

Not your typical Hawaii vacation pics, but everyone takes those! (And yeah I've got plenty of those too...)

That's a Western Black Rat snake

The weird knotted shape you see is a defensive posture. The snake stayed completely still until I had gotten at least 20 yards away, after which it slithered off the road into the woods. I took the photo from a distance of at least 8 feet

Here are some trailcam photos of wildlife around a seasonal stream. Nothing fancy from a photographic perspective but who doesn't love deer & squirrels.

Took my Sony a6000 to the zoo to try some new content (been shooting mostly static landscape and portraits of the new baby). Was fun trying to navigate camera settings, framing, dealing with shadows, etc in a "fast paced" environment. This macaw was probably my favorite pic of the day. He drew quite the crowd, so it was difficult to get him without people in the background (which I obviously failed at) but I was excited to catch this nice spread. I haven't decided if I'll frame it yet, if I do I'll probably have my friend remove the kids from the background in photoshop.

After getting my knees replaced last year, I haven't done much shooting. But I did get a chance to get up to Rocky Mountain National Park and see some critters.

Had some fun with my new 100-400 w/1.4x t/c.

Anybody going to make an attempt to take pictures of the totality? If so, how do you plan to go about it?

I am. I have the 100-400 and 1.4x t/c for my Fuji. I have a solar filter for it for before the totality.

I learned most of the knowledge I have on focal length and filters from Canon's site.

Apparently Google is making a "mega-movie" of the totality. You can submit your pictures to be included, more info here.
